I arrived early at Restaurant Tempel although I had made a reservation that Saturday afternoon. As a result, I was the first customer there, and the chef greeted me personally. He was absolutely wonderful, explaining the menu and offering me many options for my evening meal. Although the fixed price meal was tempting, I chose to select my own starter, soup, salad, entree, and dessert -- and the result was one of the best meals I have had in more than a year! The chef prepared freshly caught Arctic char for me, and it was superb. Everything else was great, too, and one of the really outstanding courses was the soup. The chef told me later (when I stopped before leaving to thank him for the excellent meal) that the secret to the soup being so good was very fresh ingredients and "a little thyme, fresh herbs . . ." The wait staff were very pleasant and helpful, and the wine that my waitress recommended was perfect with my meal. If I lived in Vienna, I surely would be a frequent visitor to Restaurant Tempel. We have wonderful restaurants here in the United States with award-winning chefs, and the Restaurant Tempel could give any of them some serious competition! As an added note, I found the ambiance quite nice -- clean and unpretentious with arched doorways and other charming details. It was cold and a bit rainy when I visited, but I did note that there was a very nice quiet patio where one could dine in nicer weather.
