In 35 years of visits to Wernigerode I have seen it develop from a town where there was almost nowhere to eat to an overwhelming choice of restaurants. However, on a hot Wednesday evening three of my favourites were closed so I discovered this Bavarian outpost. An outside table in this quiet street was perfect and a dark wheat beer very welcome on this very hot day. Chalkboards on the wall announced specials, including Schweinhaxe with sauerkraut and dumpling so, as this is unobtainable in Britain but universal in Germany it is often my first choice. It was a monster! The succulent meat just fell off the bone, burst with flavour, and was perfectly matched with the flavourful dumpling and sharp sauerkraut. My German colleagues claim the best haxe is served in Munich but in my opinion this offering in Wernigerode surpasses it.
After visiting the lovely city we have stopped to have lunch. The interior keeps the old german fashion way, making it more ' 'authentic ' '. Unfortunately no english menu, I was lucky to have my german friends with me. I have tried to ribs and the portion was generous; a little bit dry, but good. They have forgot about my apple strudel, so I can 't tell if it is good. The Lowenbrau beer is good :
Schöner kleiner brauner Ort in einer kleinen Straße in der Altstadt mit guter Atmosphäre und vielen traditionellen Gerichten. Sie bekommen kühles Bier von lächelnden Kellnern und es gibt auch Sitzplätze draußen. Fühlen Sie sich frei, mitzumachen, wenn jemand anfängt zu singen. Zuverlässige Preise! Nur der Ort, den Sie gesucht haben, um das letzte Bier zu trinken, bevor Sie nach Hause gehen:
Nur abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade und es gibt Tische auf der Straße, sodass man die Leute beobachten kann. Wir bestellten den trockenen Wein und sehr schöner trockener Weißwein kam in einer Literflasche an. Das war sehr praktisch und der Service war freundlich.
