"It was very expensive, and the fish was not up to standard. We had to wait for service. The quiche claimed to be homemade but looked very tired and just like one from Brake Bros."

After a walk round the fields and lanes above Dittisham we normally lunch at the Red Lion, on their terrace with a beautiful view up the river. We did not realise, however, that their kitchen closes on Saturday afternoon. So we asked at the Anchor Stone if they had a table and we were lucky as one was just being vacated. We were told the table was needed in an hour and a half; no problem as we had a ferry to catch. A few minutes wait and we were seated in the sunshine on the balcony with another stunning view of the river somewhat closer. The staff could not have been more helpful, carrying the large menu boards right to our table and giving prompt and friendly service. We shared a starter of mackerel pate with bread, absolutely delicious. My main was the largest stash of mussels I have ever seen in a bowl, and they were plump and juicy with a fairly delicate sauce. The other main was the special fish of the day, cooked just right. I fancied a cake dessert, but was nicely full so the staff boxed a piece for me to take away. We will go again, but make sure to book first as the cafe is deservedly popular.

The whole experience was outstanding, aided of course by the stunning location. We sat in the “loung” overlooking the river, on a lovely sunny day which helped with the experience, but it was still a little draughty. We had a small lunch, but all 6 meals were excellent. I had the scallops which came with bread crumbs which I was apprehensive about, but they were extremely tasty. We caught the ferry from Dartmouth and then the tiny boat across the river. A great way to spend a September Saturday afternoon.

We were going to Greenway crossing the river Dart by means of the small ferry from Dittisham rather than via Dartmouth and saw this lovely caferestaurant. So we booked lunch for our way back. So pleased that we did. It us a fantastic location on the river’s edge in a small village. Two of us had the crab tart and two tge fish and chips. Both meaks were great. This was followed by a lovely plumb crumble with ice cream. Nice glasses if wine and great service made this a great lunch with friends.

This is the third time we have been in consecutive years. This time we felt that it OK but not as good as the first two times. Service was great as ever but the food was a little disappointing. The fish pie was dry with little sauce surrounding the fish. The crab tart was OK but not as good as previous years. We were due to go again but decided not to.
