So, a family outing, different ages and appetites, a fairly high level of disagreement on the location of the restaurant (it's off the beaten track but very well signposted, if you can just stop chatting for a moment and pay attention to the road please), therefore a rather flustered party of six of us arrived mid-week for lunch. It was hot, we sat outside in the courtyard under parasols admiring the Basque linen and glasses.We had the set menu (one of those travelling blackboards that gets to sit on many chairs), which looked hmm ok, fine, nothing fancy, 14 euros for three courses, wine extra. Then things got a bit suprising .. the pumpkin, basil, and chestnut soup which sounded a bit dodgy and which my brother only ordered out of a misplaced loyalty to pumpkins, was extraordinarly delicious, as was our potato, chorizo, chilli and spring onion salad. Mains were Senegalese sausage in a spicy sauce (superb), and chicken in an orange and mushroom sauce (old school but beautifully done) with perfect chips. Puddings were Gateau Basque (made by our lovely waitress's boyfriend, and said to be the 'best I've ever had' by the person best qualified to make such a wild claim as he is local and has been for 80 years), ice creams, and salted caramel rice pudding.There is something really ambitious and delicious happening in the kitchen here - can't wait to go back.
