This was a quick stop off for us en route from Eymet to Rouen. We had been going for a good while when it was decided sustenance was needed so a quick consult of TA threw up a few options and this one won. The location is on a main road opposite which is a huge car park for Les tourists to park up whilst they have their lunch and a break at the Auberge. Clientele is a curious mix of truckers, tourists and locals but these are deftly managed by Madame and are segregated. We, like similar others were shepherded to a small quiet room at the rear of the restaurant away from the drivers. The menu was simple and apparently good value. Her Ladyship and I both plumped for the €18.50 set menu which had options. I went for the local salad which was a mix of ham, eggs and cheese with the inevitable rabbit food whilst Lady F went for a terrine with foie gras. Both were tasty. We opted for the same mains which was a brochette de boeuf (one blue, one á point). These were served with salad garnish and chips. Whilst the beef was cooked beautifully and was very tasty, sadly the chips had been left in the fryer too long and many were like bullets. The place is evidently very popular as it was busy however only two waitresses were on hand to deal with the demand which meant that service was a relaxed affair for all but the truck drivers who were in and out understandably quickly. Regrettably after an hour and a half of just two courses of our four course menu, we had no option but to hit the road again to meet our deadline. Whilst this is more our fault than that of the Auberge, and I would loved to have had a leisurely 3 hour lunch, sadly the slow service tainted the experience a little for us. (As indeed did the unnecessarily loud Englishwoman in the party of four next to us who had a voice that both carried and assailed the ears in both pitch and tone. Her voice could be heard, unfortunately over everyone else’s)! Anyway, digressions aside, the food at the Auberge was passable. If you want anything but leisurely service, you’ll need a 38ton truck, but if you have time to spare then the Auberge du Pont will provide you with a fair meal at a fair price. Go for the brochette it’s quite good!
