Bar du Commerce

I like this place, which is in the main street of Fontevraud l 'Abbaye and has been there for many years. Places like it hardly exist in England, if at all, and although one of its several signs announces 'Bar Snack ' it 's hardly the reversal of...those two words, being best described as a café/brasserie and bar. It also sells newspapers, magazines, post cards and lottery tickets; there are a few games here and there. You can eat inside or on the rear terrace, which leads off St Catherin 's alley, and is enclosed on three sides by the Bar buildings and the mairie and overlooked by the parish church on the fourth; what could be more pleasant! I 'm unsure of the opening times which aren 't announced but it is generally closed on Tuesdays. The menu is fairly brief and the food simple; however it is well cooked and served by the friendly staff. It is, of course, licensed and you can have a glass of wine with your meal or just a drink of wine, beer or coffee; the house wine, as usual in France, is good. Unlike the multitude of eateries that have sprung up nearby in recent times, the Bar du Commerce is totally unpretentious and very good value for money. Just the place for a excellent, quick, simple meal at a fair price.

We came here with two hungry kids tired from the visit to the monastery. We were extra irritated after waiting 30 minutes without any response in another fancy restaurant in the center. Very friendly service. We were served quickly. Simple but very tasty meal. The...kids were happy we were happy. Everybody happy...

We had a lovely bistro lunch at this friendly bar right in the center of Fontevraud -L'Abbaye, seated in the pretty courtyard away from the traffic. Madame was charming, and the food was excellent.
