We booked our table weeks in advance for a special occasion as we had English and French friends visiting us in France. Our group of five arrived on time to find we were seated in a tiny entrance area in a spot with lots of passage. We politely asked, with a smile, if it were possible to change tables since it was early and many tables appeared to be free in the next room, but our request was refused with a strong shake of the head and a rather abrupt 'no'. To be fair, we were offered a table facing ours but it was in the same position, so we said we would stay at ours and it didn't matter, that was fine. The menu then arrived. It's a blackboard that all five of us found difficult to read (and we are tertiary educated and fluent in French) - there's a lot of fancy writing squeezed onto it. In addition, only the name of the dish is listed and it is hard to figure out if the sauce is creamy, with butter, wine based, what the ingredients might be, etc. We asked for explanations and while we got them, our request was met with what felt like a fair amount of mockery. Our food arrived and overall it was beautiful and the chef ought to be complimented, except that one guest was served a different accompaniment to what was stated on the blackboard, without being warned, and she was disappointed. At the end of the meal the bill was placed on our table. I glanced at it and my husband and I discussed for literally 30 seconds whether to use his card or mine (we are renovating the house and in France there are strict daily limits on withdrawals and spending with cards, regardless of the amount of money on your bank account). A lady, possibly the owner or manager, then snatched the bill off our table and barked her way through it, listing every item before looking at me in a somewhat military fashion and saying "that's right, no?". I was embarrassed in front of my guests. Next week we have Australian friends arriving, and the following week our wedding anniversary. While the food is lovely, we will not be returning Chez Hubert. We will celebrate elsewhere.
