I have a nice story for you. My family and I, from Costa Rica, went to Gruyères for the first time and we chose the Brasserie du Relais as the place to have dinner. The cuisine of the place is wonderful, I tell it trying...to be objective and with the background of having eaten in nice restaurants of Barcelona and France the last week. Mr. Luis really knows how to cook. But my comment goes beyond the cooking. We weren't aware of the fact that the last train/bus leaves Gruyères at 8 pm and we finished our dinner at 10 pm (yes we took our time). With no trains/buses until the next day we had no other option than to walk 12 Km in the middle of the night to get to our B&B, but when I went to ask if it was safe to walk at night in the surroundings Mr. Luis left the restaurant in someone else's hands, took his car and drove 30 minutes to drop us at the door of our B&B. I was so amazed by how this man went the extra mile to give us a wonderful touristic experience in Gruyères. If you want to be served by kind and selfless peojple do not hesitate on paying a visit to this place. Besides the good deed I told here, the food is outstanding, we ate grilled beef, chicken and pork, as well as sandwiches, fries and salad. Everything was just delicious.
We came here by default because the restaurant in the Maison du Gruyere said that they would not be able to provide us anything to eat in the 45 mins we had before our train left (even though the restaurant was empty). So we crossed...over the road and tried the Brasserie. We were the only customers, but got a friendly welcome. We had exactly what we wanted a croute de Gruyere ie Ham and (lots of) cheese on toast, and a bier pression. Not challenging cuisine, but very well done. Expensive for a brasserie (20 CHF), but probably similar prices to the restaurants in Gruyere Ville. Given that the brasserie is literally on the station platform, we had plenty of time to catch our train.
Ich habe dieses Restaurant besucht, da es direkt gegenüber der Gruyere-Käsefabrik lag. Sie haben Sitzplätze im Freien, aber an einem Samstagnachmittag war nur eine Kellnerin da. Beschlossen, das Käsefondue zu essen, das mit Brotstücken und Kartoffeln serviert wird. Meine Schwester hatte ihr Garnelengericht, was gut war. Das Fondue selbst war ok, nichts Spektakuläres. Eine Flasche Quellwasser kostet 7 CHF, was meiner Meinung nach mit anderen Orten vergleichbar ist. Der Service war jedoch nicht schlecht, auch wenn nur eine Kellnerin etwa vier Tische bediente.
Perfectly good cafe with a typical selection of dishes. We went to salads who were sworn to my father. Service a bit hit and miss, but everything perfectly good...
