Tucked away in the foothills of the Canigou is the café/restaurant Can Père. This quaint little restaurant has been open for a few years and after a rocky start has now been taken over by a family who seem to have really got it spot on. Nathalie & Joel Dallacia moved here from Le Gers. After having difficulty in finding work, they saw an advert on "Le Bon Coin" and decided to take on the restaurant. Joel, a butcher by trade and Nathalie with a background in sales make a winning formula for the restaurant. They offer a very friendly welcome and delicious home-made food from starter to desert. Their delicious main courses include Porc Cheek in Banyuls and duck breast with fig and home-made deserts to die for such as fondant chocolat with raspberries. Special diets are catered for on request such as vegetarians and, although Nathalie only has a very basic school English she will always try her best and all menus will be translated into English too. Mon-Thursday they offer the menu of the week which is between 13.90 & 15.90euros (3 courses, wine not included) and the weekend menu from 15.90-20euros (3 courses, including wine). For the summer they are open 7 days a week from 8.30am and from September will close just on Wednesdays. They plan to have a lively entertainment schedule including some great live music, so look out for these events in the What’s On.Eat in the simple, but very clean restaurant or outside in the place du village just in front of the beautiful roman church "église Saint-Michel". I have now eaten there twice and can highly recommend it. Being a vegetarian, I find it difficult to find a good restaurant that offers a tasty meal I couldn’t have cooked better myself at home. However, Nathalie & Joel offered me just that. The first time was an omlette (oh how many times have I eaten that in a restaurant in France) BUT this time I can honestly say it was the tastiest omlette I’ve ever eaten and I was not at all disappointed. The second time, after the sublime home-made gaspacho (one of my favourite starters) Nathalie had prepared me a delicious salad included goats cheese, asparagus, different kinds of tomatoe and lettuce sprinkled in sesame seeds. Obviously a lot of thought and attention had been put into offering a delicous vegetarian alternative. Why not give it a try and combine your visit with taking in some of the local splendour such as the chapel & ruined chateau in La Trinité, La Tour de Batere, the iron mines, many beautiful walks and, of course, the majestic Canigou.

We went to La Bastide, a lovely little village hidden away in the Pyrénées-Orientales, specifically to try this village bistro, about which we had heard good things. The drive up to the village is lovely, and the trip was well worth it for the food. The restaurant/bar itself is typical of this sort of eating establishment - clean and functional, but quite basic. It was in September when the summer tourists if any, have gone, and we four were the only diners. The dishes available are shown on a blackboard at the door, and even though we were so few, there were several choices. The starter of salad with warm chicken in sesame seed was delicious and very well presented. Main courses were good, and a litre of P-O wine was amazing value at only €6!We ate reasonably early, at 7.30pm, and as we were the only customers we left early, at about 9.30pm - it seemed unfair on the owners to make them wait longer for us.A very enjoyable evening, extremely friendly people and good food, very reasonably priced.Well worth a visit if you are in the area.A word of warning - finding the telephone number to book was quite difficult - use the mobile phone 06 60 15 02 37 to contact the restaurant.
