Intolerances provided for simply, without fuss. We were under time restraints and the food arrived quickly so we weren't rushed. Staff knowledge of menu specials and and wine list were excellent. Our waitress's wine recommendation to match the swordfish on bitter greens was spot on. I look forward to ny next meal there."

I ate here almost weekly for several years when I was still working and loved everything about the place. My last visit was for my retirement lunch six years ago so, I was delighted when friends suggested that we meet there for a Thursday lunch. We decided to make a bigger visit of it with an overnight stay at the Adina just down the street and a night at the theatre later that day to see "Kinky Boots".Three of us arrived half an hour early at noon but two tables of diners were already seated and the place was very busy by 12.30 when the other three arrived. We early birds had started with an excellent martini for me and margaritas for them and the one of our party who hadn't been here before had the opportunity to have a look around at the decor. There is a very old world feel about this basement room and I was again reminded of the delightful Ristorante Paoli in Florence.When the others arrived, they opted for a bottle of Quealy pinot grigio so we had another round of cocktails. I didn't know any of the staff but they were all friendly, welcoming and efficient and there was a great welcome from Caterina who returned twice during the lunch for a chat. She really is the most gracious host and seemed to visit every table during the lunch service. As always, the food was wonderful with each of us very happy with our choices. The standouts for me were the Vitello Tonnato (which I always used to have here) and the great Costoletta which was an enormous crumbed pork cutlet (absolutely beautiful). The servings are large so, predictably, the sides of spinach and roast potatoes which the other two guys insisted on ordering were largely untouched. A bottle of Dorigati pinot grigio was particularly good but one of the party preferred the Quealy so we got another bottle of that too. Two bottles of the excellent Farr Rising shiraz also evaporated as did six bottles of sparkling water (poured somewhat overgenerously by the staff).We finished with an Affogato each and were then presented with a complimentary tipple of Cat's special grappa rocket fuel. It was a wonderful lunch and we finally staggered back into the sunlight just before 4pm. The bill was frightening at $1083 but that included $592 for drinks. Still my favourite restaurant in the city.
Caterina's has always been a huge favourite of mine. The food is always outstanding. The menu is constantly enticing with the wonderful specials that are fresh and new, every day.So many glorious dishes to choose from. I am never disappointed. I entertain my clients here on a regular basis and Caterina and her staff never let me down. This is my go to place for a great lunch every time.The ambience of this classic pearl is simply lovely. I encourage you to come and experience this delightful restaurant, if you still haven't discovered it. I have been enjoying Caterina's for some 15 years now, and know it will always be an excellent experience for my clients. They too have now fallen in love and frequent it with their loved ones for lovely dinners etc. Thank you Caterina for your consistent high standard and unwavering high quality in food and service. It is always a real pleasure to dine here.
It has been several years since I've visited this place and now I'm asking myself why I left it so long? From the moment you walk down the stairs you are welcomed like an old friend. Caterina has been running this Melbourne establishment for 21 years now. She knows her stuff. Beautiful decor make sure you take the time to check it out. Very classy in every way. With so many specials memorised by the staff and described so well who needs to bother looking at the menu. Two of us had the pasta with Moreton Bay Bugs chilli and cherry tomatoes. The other had a ravioli with quail dish. We shared a couple of appetisers and the cheesecake. Highly recommended. Will be back soon
This place never disappoints with excellent authentic Italian cooking. The menu is extensive when the mutitude of specials are included. I have had the gnocchi with pork shoulder ragu the last three times I have been there. This dish is divine. The dumplings are light and melt in the mouth and it is very well complimented by the flavourful ragu. My meal companions have been equally delighted by their dishes. This is where is where you go for authentic Italian cooking. Not Lygon St. I will always come back here. Shame that it is not open for dinner. Would be there in heartbeat every month if it was!
