The Bay Area is overflowing with excellent restaurants, so seeing the hype (and price) of Chez TJ, we were excited for our first post COVID fine dining celebration. At the end, we enjoyed the experience and the creative food. But looking back, we would have chosen differently. The beginning set the strange tone. We showed up on time for our reservation, as did the table across from us. We sat for minutes with our tap water before being greeted by a server (at a Michelin-star restaurant). Then we got the empty champagne flutes for our wine pairing, which sat empty for another minutes. Usually in such a situation, the restaurant would just pour your glass, apologize for the delay, and top you off when the amuse bouche arrived. Not Chez TJ. There was also an issue with the bathroom where they’d have you request to add your name to the list then interrupt you two bites into a warm dish to tell you it was your turn (at a Michelin-star restaurant). The weird hiccups like this continued throughout the night, to the point the other table joined us in giggling over each mishap. The staff all meant well, the food was creative, there’s a global pandemic. We went with it. But being charged for a bumpy dining experience is not really worth it. The competition at the price is still excellent
