My family and I thought we would give this place a go based on the flowing reviews we read. Having been through the experience (And it was one from start to finish! I wonder whether the restaurant has changed hands or whether the previous reviewers had too many beers. So the positives are the location is very beautiful and the folks that run the place are friendly. Oh, and it's very cheap. On to the problems: 1. The outside area where the tables were was very untidy with toys scattered everywhere and the family's washing on display. We encountered the family's lovely pre school children who could certainly be both seen and heard for a lot of the time. 2. When we ordered our drinks it took 30 minutes for them to arrive. This is because we asked for a glass of wine and a fin and tonic and following our order the waiter got in his car and disappeared for 25 mins and then he returned with a bag of ice. These folks were extremely unprepared. We were left waiting with no explanation whatsoever. It was farcical. 3. The food was terrible. My wife had a dish called Migas which was essentially a plate of greasy bread crumbs with an overlooked fried egg and a green pepper yum. It is clearly the case that the food is prepared well in advance and then reheated when required. This review is not as scathing as it could have been as basically the restaurant is what some would call rustic in reality the place is in a shack where the owners do not have a clue. Give this place a wide berth there are some nice restaurants in nearby Alcaucin which would be much better.
We passed this hidden restaurant on the way to the mountains, as it is set back from the road within a lovely seating area. On the way back down from the mountain we decided to stop and have something to eat and we were not disappointed. The owner was very helpful and spoke only a little english, so described to us what some of his best dishes were. The food was superb and it was nice to try actual spanish cuisine. I had like meatballs in a creamy mustard sauce, my husband had breadcrumbs and couscous with a giant pepper. Our daughter had chicken and when she cut into it some was not cooked so we took it back and the owners wife came back out with more chicken that was cooked through and said that she would re cooked the whole meal if not satisfied. Even when the owner had to pop out he told us that his wife was inside. They bent over themselves to provide great service and it didn't go unnoticed. I would say the only thing we noticed was that it only opened mainly on a Saturday and Sunday and only in the week if booked. If this was open during the week I know we would have gone again. I highly recommend popping into this restaurant if you go to the mountains as it was worth every penny we paid. For the three of us for soft drinks and food it came to 27 euros, so 9 euros a head outstanding.
The food is average, but the experience is the real reason for visiting. Set in the natural park this is a beautiful venue with streams and numerous picnic areas. Access from Alcaucin is easy, the road has been resurfaced and there are now roadside barriers too. The salad and croquetas were nice, the meat and chips a little too greasy for my liking. If this restaurant was turned into a commercial venue, and upgraded, it would be very popular. Then again, it's nice to experience the tranquillity and simplicity of this venue too. Only open at weekends, note.
Excellent friendly service from owner Raúl, lovely food at a great price, in a beautiful setting. Lovely for a weekend treat, though he will open by prior arrangement at during the week for groups larger than 8 people.
