The restaurant is housed in what was the area's oldest hotel built in 1886. It's fabulous but otherwise it is a typically noisy bierhaus atmosphere with traditional fare such as schnitzel, pork knuckle, sauerkraut, etc.Some in our large group enjoyed their pork belly but others regretted their choice. The schnitzel was basic but a silly choice on my part. After generously salting the accompanying chips, I discovered the salt and pepper shakers had been filled incorrectly and my chips were actually swimming in white pepper.Our group ordered 1 shared entree, 14 mains, and 2 desserts. With corkage around $10/bottle, after the split I ended up paying $42 for a very boring schnitzel and numerous glasses of water! You really need a big voice, good hearing, a taste for beer and a fat wallet to really enjoy this place.
Positives:- the ambiance is lovely,- extensive menu with some interesting choices,- good range of German Austrian bier at fair prices,- cost for 2 with 2 glass wine, 1 x 300ml bier 2 courses $100aud,- staff are attentive and organised,Negative.- no alcohol free Bier despite 2 choices on the menu,- miss understanding about $3 extra for sauce- waitress should have mentioned sauce ' an extra'. it is in the menu,Summary,I would go back, thought Kaiser Stuben is really god too!
This is far from quality Austrian food. We were in a group of five which included two chefs, one of whom is from Linz in Austria. We ordered a variety of meals including fritatten soup, schnitzels etc. Everyone walked away disappointed, I only regret that this is not representative of quality Austrian cooking.
Thought this was going to be a great place to take my family for a birthday dinner, but I certainly wasn't happy with the service at this restaurant from the beginning. Food was ok but don't think I will be heading back here anytime soon. Sorry for negative review
