El Mercadet De Mar

We have been in Altafulla for two weeks and have had the opportunity to try all the restaurants with a terrace by the sea of the town. I can only talk about how well we have eaten these days in the 5 restaurants that are on the promenade by the sea. But we have to recognize that, by far, in the end we have repeated and repeated every night at Mercadet del Mar. The first reason is because the location is perfect, since it is on the promenade, but a little separated, almost at the end, so it is not like the other much more bustling terraces. The terrace is just 5 minutes from the shore of the sea... You can have dinner while you hear the waves breaking. That is the only noise... no cars, no machines... The second reason is that the food is absolutely delicious. And after all these days, no day has failed any of the dishes and we have been able to try practically the entire menu. The fast and efficient service. The manager and the waiters, fantastic. The cook or cooks ... to take them home. Many typical Catalan dishes, delicious, but I have to recommend the fish, rice (I don't like to eat rice in the night, but in this case we couldn't stop doing it and the seafood (what a wonder of prawns and the sauce of mussels, oysters and hedgehogs ... , but also salads (what a fantastic tomato burrata . All very fresh and products of the day. Only one recommendation: you have to book because if it is not impossible to get a table. However, they open from 10 in the morning and I think kitchen is working until 10 pm. We only went for dinner, and dinner time is busy since 6:30 pm.

As a party of five, we ate here on the beautiful seafront of Altafulla. I noticed the grubby menu covers but against my better judgement we stayed and ordered three veggie paellas, monkfish, a spaghetti bolognese and a veggie salad. The paella was combined into a larger pan, with a layer of paella around one inch deep. The vegetables consisted of perhaps one or two thinly sliced pieces of mushroom, peas, and a few asparagus and tomato bits overwhelmed by concentrated vegetable stock. When divided into three portions there was a small plateful each: 3 x €15.50. Do the arithmetic and decide for yourselves! The green salad was also imo an exercise in minimising ingredients: a couple of thinly sliced pieces of carrot, on boiled egg and one or two handfuls of crunchy lettuce: crunchy with grit, unfortunately. It hadn't been properly washed. Another €12. The monkfish was good. I'd say that overall, the driving idea here is to separate diners from their money with the least possible investment.

We have been in this restaurant 3 times already and it was always amazing. The steak is one of the best I’ve ever eaten, fish and seafood are very fresh. Dorada in salt is delicious! Pulpo (octopus) is very soft. What I appreciated a lot is beautiful food serving, because usually beach restaurants in Spain don’t do it, too traditional and almost no chief’s personal vision. Here they deserve the praise! All their sauces are selfmade. All ingredients like tomatoes, salad etc are of very high quality, they definately choose every tomato. So we definately come back!

Great sea view, nice vines, a bit touristic based menu. Have to try paella, classical plates are also good:anchovies, clams, etc
