This type of French cafeteria is often associated with the larger supermarkets. It is a unique French experience and can be daunting before one gets used to the system.Food is usually plentiful, tasty and very good value. At peak times queues are normal – to pay up front for the chosen meal, then to actually collect the meal from an appropriate counter. This is not gourmet eating – just good, basic French food. There are usually a considerable number of French families eating here – especially at weekends. You will not see many tourists, except those who are “in the know”.The deal is that you collect a tray, cutlery, glasses at the front and then select your choice of cold starter, dessert, salads from self-service counters; also bread rolls and drinks (including wines and beer). You then join a queue to pay for this and for your selection of the hot main course (choices clearly displayed at the entrance and near the pay desks) and you receive a ticket for each main course chosen. Payment by credit card is almost always possible. You then find a table, collect condiments and water from a central location and enjoy your starter before going to the appropriate counter to collect you main course which is usually cooked to order as you wait. Plentiful vegetables are provided nearby and you help yourself.Staff are busy cleaning tables between customers and it is customary to take your tray with dirty dishes to one of the collection points when you have finished. Our meal for 2 cost 23 euros for 2 starters, 2 min courses and a half bottle of wine.Be brave – give it a try!
