I have been there four times this year. The first time with my sister in law who lives in Melbourne and was touring Germany and Austria with my wife. We skipped the soup and chose cooked pork with horseradish as a main course, Krenfleisch as...the locals call it. It is a every day dish but not at Nibelungenhof. Where it was raised to gastronomic heigths. And so were the main courses we and our guests had the other three times we tool a detour of 15 miles to go there from Mautern, a little town at the Danube. Of the main dishes I recall a roll, sort of omelette but more rigid, the dough being interlaced with thin smoked ham, the lumen filled with sort of a cheese soufflé. The roll came with a wonderful creamy sauce I can 't properly describe, and green sallads. My wife and I usually followed the proposal of the lady of the house (a family run business) but some of our Swedish guests chose more mundane dishes like Wiener Schnitzel. I should also mention a piglet roll steak and a piglet (mini)shank from the oven, both excellent. Very friendly hosts. Nice garden, bland restaurant Gasthaus style. On a road with a lot of traffic, be careful when crossing. You should park at the road running along the town wall left of the city gate going back, in part, to Roman times.
We stayed here as part of a bike tour. Cycling there we were a little frustrated that we were 2 miles off the cycle route but...We just can 't fault the place. The owner/hostess went out of her way to make you feel welcome. We were...greeted with a 'house ' cordial then directed to the hotel area which is separate to the restaurant. The room was clean and well decorated with free WiFi in it, the code was left in the room making it easy to access. We sat outside for a bit in the courtyard which was lovely and had the added touch of blankets to keep you warm. Dinner was amazing, everything was freshly cooked. Grandma 's pudding was fab and I was given a huge portion. Breakfast was continually topped up with freshly baked bread. I also took some of the homegrown carrots for later and even they were delicious and crunchy. Just can 't say how great this place was.
We spent one night at the Gasthof as part of our bike tour along the Danube. We highly recommend it both for the accommodation and its food. The rooms were large, clean and quiet and the hostess/owner was extremely welcoming. We enjoyed a wonderful...meal in their outdoor patio, that made creative use of locally grown produce and meats. One of our favourites was the roast chicken. We also shared a fabulous apricot based dessert that was apparently a recipe from the grandmother of the hostess. The quality of the food was matched by the local wines and spirits. There was a separate spacious garage in which to store our bicycles. The breakfast was also excellent. Even if you are not staying in the Guesthouse, you should certainly make a point of eating in the restaurant. You will not regret it.
we visited this restaurant during another guesthouse in this small town on our Danube Circle. the restaurant is family-run, eating was delicious and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. the prices are very reasonable. we enjoyed and would recommend...others
