After living around the corner for nearly five years, my husband and I decided we should go here for dinner. We were the only diners and only one person came in for take away, so service was obviously very good. The young girl working seemed shy, but very nice. We ordered the tempura vegetables to split for starter, which on the menu listed things like sweet potato, cauliflower and other veg I would expect in the dish. What showed up was mostly deep fried onions with a couple bits of cabbage, broccoli (ok), capsicum and one bit of grated carrot - none of which were mentioned on the menu. Our combination chow mien was ordered hot (we were asked if we would like hot or mild), at which point hubby made mention that we do really like spice. It didn't seem to have a single bit of chili or spice in it and was a bit average at best. Our Szechuan beef was pretty good, but not fantastic. We also ordered a dish we had never had which sounded good, braised scallops with crab meat and egg white. Apparently a traditional and respected dish in China, so we thought we would give it a try. I can't comment on whether it was a good or bad representation of the dish as I've never had it before, but I had a hard time finding any crab meat at all. Hubby wasn't a fan, but I didn't mind it. One thing that bothered us both was the soy sauce on the tables. A small Kikkoman bottle, which we use quite a bit at home, was obviously refilled with a far less superior product. To me, that's as bad as swapping the label on a bottle of wine or balsamic. It was much thicker and had far less flavour than Kikkoman soy sauce. We left wondering how this restaurant stays open, as we have always noticed that there never seemed to be anyone dining there.
