Only a little way off the beaten track, just below the top of the Penken gondola station, This mountain restaurant sits among trees overlooking the Zillertal valley above Mayrhofen, With wonderful views across to the Ahorn and up the valley to Finkenberg and the Hintertux glacier.The menu is traditional Austrian, the food is simple and not fine dining but well presented, hot and very tasty indeed, The real quality comes from the staff...all hospitable, very friendly and efficient a real asset to the restaurant. The atmosphere is of relaxed serenity with as many walkers as skiers enjoying the views and hospitality. We ate in a different mountain restaurant each day of our holiday and most of them were very good indeed, but for the all round experience the Gschosswandhaus excelled.
We had lunch here almost every day during last week's skiing because it is also the place where our kid had lunch with the skiclass. The place is a short walk away from the Penkenbahn what makes it less crowdy than other restaurants around. The views from the terrace are great, staff is very friendly and welcoming. It does not give the sense of hurry and you can take the time to enjoy the food and views. Food is mainly traditional dishes like goulash soup, cheese noodles, tyrolean pancakes, etc... the Kasespatzle or tyrolean cheese noodles were really good.
We ate here a few times during a recent visit having discovered the restaurant a couple of years ago. The open air terrace has magnificent views of the Zillertal Alps and the food is well cooked traditional Austrian alpine fare. The service is also unusually efficient as well as friendly. You often get one or the other with these types of mountain restaurant but not both. This is definitely a stand out venue for a great summer lunch.
This is a table service restaurant where the service is friendly and efficient. Each of our selections were very tasty, filling and great value. On good weather days the outside area fills up very quickly-and for good reason-it is a real sun trap with spectacular views. This is our third visit to Mayrhofen and we always make sure we dine here at least once. Have never been disappointed. eating here.
