It is known that my favorite food is Malaysian, although other cuisine comes in a near second and third. For my birthday, my partner Jim brought me to a restaurant in Newport, near Newport Station. The owner Noel and his nice host...Veronica make a fabulous team. Noel has not only a passion for his food, but for life itself. It creates a welcoming atmosphere of warmth and generous hospitality. Kuala Lumpur was born, he learned to cook from his mother and carries this tradition for his loyal customers in small old Newport. As we have repeatedly denounced, people are coming to place or pick up their order, and everyone is on a first name basis. Noel asks about her day, her family and joins them in a way that is authentic, genuine and open, quite refreshing. Noel took our order of vegetarian curry puffs, beef return and a roti with peanut sauce, but for me, he did something not from the menu but his own creation of noodles, vegetables and chicken. So let me unpack the comfort of our meal. Vegetarian curry puffs. Who had no curry buffers where the pastry around the edges was thick and a little crispy and lacked a lot of filling. Me! Always! Not here in Hawkers Lane. The pastry was tender and light, generously filled with vegetables. I could order half a dozen, just like a meal. As a Malaysian food aficionado, this is by far the best curry buffers ever! Beef yield. A popular menu and Noels version was gently spicy with a sauce that was not too sweet. Served with steamed rice, Jim said it was the best he ever had. My meal. Chicken, vegetables and noodles were made by Noel for me. Was not on the menu, only made for me with ingredients I told him I love most. Fresh and generous portion size. Roti with peanut sauce. The Roti was well cooked, but the peanut sauce was a "Jammy" combination of peanuts and other ingredients that were luscious and saporous. It should be filled and sold to the public. Before we left, Jim tried a seafood curry buffer and again, a culinary treat. There's a rumor that people are ringing through their pick-up order in Yarraville, dropping off at Newport and picking up their order and coming back to the next train. Apparently as a traveler and reviewer, I've been thriving all over the world and I'm always on the hunt for good Malaysian food and here it was just a few suburbs from my home. We will return soon! Tera makasi Noel. Notes: cash only as an ATM next door. A total of 9 stools indoors and occasionally outdoors. Wheelchair accessible, but tables are high, so would be a challenge to eat at a table. BYO's okay. Good parking. Kid friendly. Great takeaway service. Accessible by public transport. Dietaries you let know.
There’s a lot to be said about Hawkers Lane, good street food but lacks complexity.It’s an interesting business model in that it’s situated in a quiet street opposite Newport station and so depends on foot traffic from commuters and leaflet/Menu letterbox drops to advertise its existence. Its hours are limited, doesn’t accept cards (cash only) has one table and a window bench/stool type seating arrangement, pick up only and doesn’t do home delivery.It’s a nice neat set up, well set out with an open view into the kitchen area and a speedy 15 - 20 minutes for the order to be made up, 7-8 staff, 4-5 were in the kitchen. Probably one of the reasons for the pricey food! Front of house staff provided good service, polite and helpful.Street food is now very popular and chic in Melbourne and the Newport clientele are, in old terms, the yuppies of the 2000’s who may or may not be able to afford the high priced street food concept they offer.For Friday night take away I ordered a variety of dishes to gage the quality of the cuisine – 2 entrees, Pork Dumplings (meh!) and Satay Chicken skewers (satay sauce very nice sweet style and chicken dry with cinnamon kind of spiciness). Four main dishes, Hokkien Noodle (soft cooked Hokkien noodles with prawns, calamari, fish cakes and bok choy in a dark soy sauce), Mongolian Beef Curry with rice (nice dish), Belachan Peasant Seafood Mixed (as stated on menu - Triple – Twist (?) cooked with battered fish, king prawns, calamari braised with green beans an capsicums (also very nice) and Chinese Broccoli with beef with oyster sauce.The cost?, $82 – a bit pricy when you consider it’s supposed to be ‘Street food’ and when compared to other Asian restaurants in the area who’s menus offer more complex i.e., piquant flavours along with a greater variety of vegetables other than capsicum, it’s just better value for money.A further comment on the capsicum; what is it with Asian cuisine and capsicum? I know it adds sweetness and colour if you mix the three - yellow, green and red. However it’s a bit mundane and lacks imagination. The business model is here again quite obvious in that the menu presents colour and one dimensional flavour in a very economical way, depending heavily on simple sauces to create interest and therefore capitalising/depending on the affluent (?) clientele to pay the price.Don’t get me wrong try the food it is good but just doesn’t sing on the palate for the price you pay.
We have been meaning to try food from here since it opened but our friends told us it was terrible so it took awhile to visit!!Finally we decided to give it a go and it was the worst decision we ever made!!!We ordered - Dumplings, Satay chicken, Roti bread, Nasi Goreng, drunken chilli chicken and stir fried beef and vegetables the bill came to $71.50 for pick up.The dumplings had no meat in them, the satay chicken skewers were hard as a rock, the Nasi goreng was filled with oil, stir fried beef had no sauce or flavour it was like dirty dish water and the drunken chilli chicken was edible but had a couple pieces of meat and the rest was capsicum and left a horrible after taste!!!Cannot believe it cost $71.50 and it was just horrible.... none of us could eat it!! We will never visit Hawkers Lane ever again and will be very surprised if it's open by the end of the year!!!!
I have been here a few times. The first time it seemed they were still setting up, but the food was tasty and true to the flavours of Malaysia. More recently, I visited and see they are in full swing and quite popular. The shop is nicely presented and the staff friendly. Again, I'm impressed by the quality and taste of the food. They mainly cater to takeaway and being near the station this works well. However, they have a small amount of seating if you want to eat there.
