There are many amazing restuarants located in hotels but they are careful to create their own micro climate, offering an ambience distinct from the coporate so that the food can shine and the experience transcend the average. Le Goulu does it differently. The dining area has the same decor as its conference rooms and, worst of all, the same harsh lighting great for reading an agenda, less so for a cosy supper a deux. For this reason it has its work cut out and, the night we went, most of the clientel looked as if they were in business meetings and dining on expense accounts. Despite all that, the food was good, even though we went budget on the Menu du Jour. The mushroom soup was earthy and autumnal, balanced nicely with a soft egg. Duck confit also worked well with pearl barley in risotto formation. Pudding was unusual, the fig tart was fine but the liquorice ice cream left our mouths and plates looking distinctly Haloween Gothic. Good local wines available by the glass, including a fruity dessert white. The bill came to a reasonable 75E. We hear good things about the other more adventurous set menus, so, if you can live with the lack of ambience, the cooking should see you through.
