I suppose that if you want to eat tapas, you should go to Spain. We tried La Bodega on a Monday lunchtime in October, the place was about half full, and as they advertised tapas prominently, we thought that would be safe enough first...mistake. Moules persillade were not the fresh mussels you get everywhere in France, they were frozen greenlip mussels that were cold and chewy to the point of being tough. Tortilla, which should be the staple of any Spanish style restaurant was cold, chopped up and clearly had not been cooked that day ghastly! A plate of mixed charcuterie tasted good enough, but did not have either the quantity or quality to justify a 13 Euro price tag. A few thin slices of jamon, lomo, chorizo and manchego cheese was simply not good enough. If the food was poor, the service was catastrophic. The patron effected an air of Spanish eccentricity, but in fact was simply dashing from one table to another in a totally random manner. He was assisted by a young lady who appeared to feel that serving tables was beneath her, didn 't seem to know what was on the menu, and trudged around with a sullen look on her face. She would appear to have made a wrong career choice. Some of our meal came instantly, other parts came after 30 minutes wait. Three groups of customers gave up in despair of ever getting served, two others returned food that should have been hot to the kitchen because it was stone cold. I am always reluctant to give a stinker of a review where the other reviews are good, but we either hit La Bodega on a bad day, or other contributors are more easily pleased. For me, this is a place I will actively avoid in future.
La Bodega is part tourist, part local restaurant. You will receive courteous service that is intensely personal, by the owner who is Spanish by birth, and who will serve your food and drink. If you engage in conversation, you might discover more about this place,...and the friendly intensity behind it. It is an old-world experience, very European, a little quirky.
We had a salad with local produce (gizzards and lettuce . The salad was large enough as a meal and well balanced except for the dressing that was a bit greasy. The tables were small but the service was fast. A well located restaurant for a...quick meal before or after the visit to the old streets of Auch. To recommend if you need a quick decent local meal :
I was very surprised when I get my vegetarian plate: nudels, kartoffels, tomatoes, wobbles, mushrooms and fennel. on the top there were discs of cheese easy to take for vegan. it is not easy to get veggy food in gascony and close to the region...in restaurants so I was really excited to eat something really good.
