La Fontaine de Jade

We spent one evening at Bergerac a couple of weeks ago. Having been in France for nearly a fortnight, we fancied a change from the traditional French cuisine. Our first choice restaurant, that was just across the road from our hotel was closed that evening and we wanted to recce the route to the station, in advance of our departure the following day. Having walked to the station we realised that we were not in the nicest part of town. We were both hungry by now so instead of traipsing back into the downtown area we decided to give the Fontaine de Jade a try despite there being no other diners in the restaurant at the time. This restaurant was directly across the road from the main station entrance.The lady who ran the restaurant invited us to sit outside in the yard at the rear of the building. In terms of food, we would have preferred a formule set meal but this was not offered on the menu so we had to go a la carte. I have eaten a lot of Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese and the food was a sort of fusion of these three cuisines. I had chop suey but it was not like any I have eaten before. My wife had a salad. In actual fact, both were superb. A very pleasant surprise!When the bill arrived, we thought it to be quite reasonable. The Fontaine de Jade is certainly worth a visit!

I am usually massively underwhelmed by Chinese restaurants on the continent but this one was actually pretty good. We had just got off the train from Bordeaux and it was getting pretty late so decided to play it safe and go to this restaurant as it was still open and showing no signs of closing. The restaurant décor is like a million other Chinese restaurants but that is not exactly a criticism. What I would assume was the owner served us immediately and was very efficient. I had hot and sour soup which was only tenuously a soup as there was that much stuff in it! Again, not a criticism. We had the house wine which was perfectly drinkable and then I had a Szechuan dish which, again, was pretty good. There were a few other people in the restaurant who all looked pretty happy.Not exactly Michelin star but you can't really fault it.

This is our 1st choice to take everyone to when they visit us. The food is tasty, consistant and always delivers. We have always been seated and served promptly and have sometimes been advised to cut down on our choices as we have done the "british thing" of ordering too much. How many restaurants would do that????I'm equally happy to go there on my own or with a large group. I am treated with the same courtesey no matter how many people there are in the party (or the restaurant)

After arriving in Bergerac we decided to eat something and found this Oriental Restaurant just in front of the station. Food was average and pre-cooked, since our order came right away. The restaurant, specially the bathroom need an urgent restoration.

Both my wide and I went for a Chinese meal while in Bergerac. The meal was good and value for money. What we felt was a shame was for a time we were the only ones in the restaurant
