The facts: Although a reasonably priced 3 course menu was posted outside, the amiable hostess/waitress did not offer this to us, so foolishly assuming the menu was not for weekends, we examined the offerings on the expensive menu she handed us. While we were doing this, she opened a bottle of water and poured it into our glasses. At this point, my intuition told me to leave, but my husband felt it would be 'impolite '. Thus, we were accomplices in allowing the owners of this establishment to bold facedly rip us off. A tiny (and unsought) 'aperitif ' consisting of a bite of old potato omelette and another of something else they had scraped together was placed before us and showed up on the bill as 2€ per person. For two small rolls, another 4€ was charged. The wine list was nothing special at all, and since we recognized most of them from the supermarket shelves, and therefore knew the prices, we declined to order any, given the exorbitant markups we saw. Sticking with the water, we each ordered one dish only two plates of 5 small (and quite delicious) lamb chops garnished with a few fried potatoes, at 22€ the plate. The 'charming ' server suggested we have croquettes or another starter to take the edge off the waiting. We declined ... and wait we did! . As we waited, the dining room, not unattractive, filled up, as October is the off season in the Val d 'Aran and not much else was open, but this place is so cheap that our server turned out to be the only one for the full dining room. She, however, was cut out to the task and maintained her false friendliness, suggesting to each patron more and more plates in order to inflate their bills. At the end of an hour and a half, we had been served and eaten our ONE dish, and were ready to pay the bill. It was over 60€, and it wasn 't until later that I noticed not only had we paid a total of 8€ for those miserable aperitifs and two little rolls, but the 22€ per plate appeared as 24€ per plate on the bill. They had managed to get an extra 4€ out us for nothing at all. Then, of course, there was tax. We felt cheated, used, and stupid! Our advice to all is DO NOT ENTER, but if you must for some inexplicable reason, demand to see the menu posted outside, and ask at the start if you can expect to be served within a reasonable time. If not, get up and leave. Do not be fooled by the seeming charm of the hostess. Highway robbers do not calculate their moves with any greater finesse.
After a long morning we decided to make a pit stop in Arties. First restaurant that came up was this one. Though the many negative comments about this place, the 5 of us decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, we should have listened to the trip advisor comments. Nailed it right on. The table behind us (table of 2) got here before us. They brought us their order. Then in the menu, the main menu was not available. We were not advised until the moment where we needed to place our order. The personal service from the lady owner of this restaurant is something you could only wish for when going out to eat. She recommended the best dishes and the best wines, and the quality and standard is extremely high for such a small place, 10 tables inside!
We stopped here for lunch after a trek in colomers, on the way to our next destination. We has the menu of the day, with a nice selection to children from. A good deal for 28 euros for two of us.
