There is a lodge, and I'm sure the rooms are wonderful, and the service is probably spectacular, but I did not experience any of that. I'll have to try it sometime. I always camp out down the road a bit and just come for the fishing. Great seeders, even some wild. Caught a big wild trout here once a few years back. Beautiful quiet location. Nothing compares if you're looking for a good high elevation spot this is it. There are plenty of camping spots down the road. The main camp is always full, so reserve it way ahead of time, or you'll end up camping .3 to 23 miles away. Day use spots are plentiful, and each picnic area has an in ground fire pit/grill. Dogs allowed on leashes. Restrooms are public, but there are no showers. All manor of boats allowed, but there is a lake wide wake speed limit in effect. I'm pretty sure there are some good cliffs across the lake for diving, but don't quote me on it. The water is cold due to it being from the snow melt and can be freezing until July. I've been there in June (4 years ago), and the snow was still 5 to 6 feet high all around, so check the conditions before you go and plan accordingly.Nearby activities: Check out Candy Rock behind hunter dam access road and Calaveras Big TreesWalkability: All you need is your feet. There are some paved areas for what I'm guessing is for accessibility but not too far passed the parking lots.Food drinks: Food and drinks at the lodge and the nearest town is just down the road.
I drove my mom up to the lake to get out of the heat and get some dessert. A beautiful place to relax and enjoy the cool air. Mom love the gift shop and ice cream, while I got a cool beer.
