On returning by car from a meeting in Alsace, I stopped in Saarland (Germany) on October 11 to visit a dear friend who lives in Grossrosseln/Karlsbrunne. He invited me for dinner at Le Baron Rouge in Creutzwald, 20 km away across the French border in Moselle (Lorraine region). This typical French brasserie is very cosy with a small and lively dining room (terrace in the summer), well decorated in a traditional way with old paintings and old commercial ads. It serves "cuisine du terroir". It was not very crowded on a Sunday night but was still lively. The lady owner who served us was very friendly and welcoming. We started with a Kir for aperitif. There is a fixed menu with tartines, omelettes and various dishes including steak, fish, scallops, andouilettes, foie gras etc. but there is also a variety of changing "plats du jour" detailed on several blackboards on the walls. I picked for starters a "poêlée de cèpes (mushrooms)" with ham from basque country, followed with a "poêlée" of scallops provencale with some French fries, excellent by my Belgian standards. There was a good wine list.Music was intimate with both French and English songs. They have regular "soirées musette" with an accordeonist. All in all an excellent address for good country food with a nice atmosphere. My friend and I left the next day for two lovely days in Trier, reviewed separately.

Madame, the owner, provides a professional, no-nonsense service at this interesting, memorable restaurant in an otherwise forgettable town. Food is good, the Boeuf Bourguinon from the day menu (written on tall black boards) was excellent. The steak ‘Marchand-de-Vin’ was a mediocre piece of Entrecote, the red wine marinated shallots were nice. The Frites are excellent, I think they are even fresh, not previously frozen which would be great, in today’s restaurant environment with the majority of the food being from a can or bag a rarity. Very good, albeit too salty were the pan-fried potatoes. Many people were eating big salads with tartines, they seem to be a restaurant speciality. This is a somewhat cramped, small place with small tables, small circulation spaces, not to everybody’s liking, right at the edge of being uncomfortable. In retrospect I think outside seating on the sidewalk is the better choice. We will give it another try very soon.

Le Baron Rouge was recommended by the clerk at Ace Hotel where we were staying. The different courses of the menu are written on blackboards in various locations in the restaurant. Some items were difficult to read as the chalk was smudged from handling. The menu is all in French and the server the evening we were there did not understand much English, but we made do. We all had the roasted chicken which was done to perfection. There were many locals in the restaurant and it filled quickly. Definitely worth the stop, especially if you can read/understand French.

Great food & wine. Managed to get in on Saturday night even without reservation. Live music, very busy with locals (good sign). Lots of specials on blackboards all round the room
