If you have the brilliant idea to take a break or longer vacation in the French region of La Vanoise, near Pralognan or Champagny en Vanoise, for experienced hiking or discovering the mountains and its beloved inhabitants (chamois, eagles, falks, groundhogs...), we highly recommend you to stop for lunch, dinner or just a break at the restaurant Canada at Champagny le Haut. The restaurant is located a few km towards east of Champagny en Vanoise (either by car or walk - 1 hour partly in a lovely forest), at le Bois, near the refuge with the same name, and at the entrance of the camping Canada, clearly marked from the road. You will find a sunny and quiet terrace (with parasols) or a typical charming savoyard interior, with clean toilets. The owner will discretly present you the large menu composed of a la carte and menus (also for kids, who can later play on playgrounds some meters away, and leave you enjoying the view or have a ride on poneys outside the camping at the refuge). An impressive list of choices are offered, ranging from local specialities (crozets=pasta from savoie, fondue, ...) or more traditionnal recipes (entrecote, salads) or orgininal ones (duck with mango sauce...). The great deal here is the freshness and the well balanced compositions of the ingredients. We loved the "salade savoyarde", composed of green salad, warm potato pieces, tomato, egg, dry ham and dices of local cheese (15.5 euros). It may seem simple but such good salad is actually hard to find! The desserts are simply delicious and with some originalities, and blends freshness, lightness and sweetness. If you prefer ice creams, you have a long list to choose from. There is a wine list or many other drinks to dry your thirst. The service is efficient and pleasant. If you want to have great tips on local and not-so-local hiking trips, ask the owner who used to run a refuge on a mountain valley facing the restaurant. As a summary, this restaurant provides tasty quality, good service and a local touch at a reasonable price. Absolutely worthwhile a visit or a detour! It runs everyday in summer and winter and at week-ends otherwise. We found it by chance after a hike and returned to it two days after. Both occasions pleased us equally much.
