After walking from the Pont Neuf and filling our shopping bags with fresh vegetables and fruit from the Marché Aigle, we dropped into Le Charolais for lunch. We were lucky as the chilly outside quickly became standing room only -- mostly fresh oysters and white wine being consumed -- and the inside packed. We chose a tiny table near the door. The ceiling adorned with rugby balls, this classic neighbourhood bistrot was full of character: busy, loud, crowded and full of Sunday morning joy. The guy in charge looked the part of a French footballer and charged through the restaurant and customers like a forward with the ball. We ordered the bavette-frites with a side of aligot. And a half litre of merlot. The Merlot was sour and watery, and only made palatable with the addition of more water. The steak, being a cheap cut of loin, was chewy but reasonably tasty, as expected. The fries or frites were not the thin crisp type I'd hoped for, but clearly homemade (thick-cut, doughy and a bit greasy). The aligot -- a gluey mixture of melted hard white cheese, mashed potato and garlic -- was a treat. This is Paris!Le Charolais was a real treat to experience, as was the Marché Aigle on a Sunday. We walked back to the Left Bank, with a side trip on the Coulée Vert, feeling Parisian, if only for a moment.

I was staying with friends in the area and this is their local. The 'sports' bar atmosphere invites loads of friendly banter but what is really great about this little place is that all the people who work and eat/drink here are real Parisians but who are also very welcoming. Just remember, when in Paris [read France] always say hello [bonjour] and you are automatically greeted as a friend. I had so many wonderful moments here - the people, the atmosphere and the food. My last night in Paris I was treated like royalty by everyone with special extras etc and felt real sorrow at leaving. This is everyone's idea of 'how to live like a native' in Paris. And the food - really good

Were looking for a different restaurant but ended up here by mistake. Good mistake as this turned out to be a great little hole in the wall with a most pleasant waitress and surprisingly good food. We shared a meat and cheese board with a bottle of Chinon and sparkling water. The meats and cheeses were very fresh having come from the Marche Aigle across the street. Definitely a local place as we were the only Americans. Very reasonable price.

Delightfully, this was just as it looked, peering in the window. Paper on the tables, small range of wines to suit, cote de boef, or a charolais steak, or specials, or Bavette d'Aloyau. Appears to be a mainstay of local people and the marché d'Aligre? Exciting old-style French squatting toilet which was super-clean.
