"Our group of six decided to dine here as we were staying in the hotel and did not want to go far. We had a lovely meal. The menu is not long but had enough variety for even our most reluctant eater. The chef proprietor does it all in this small quaint restaurant. He takes your order then goes in the kitchen and prepares it. His English is good and the menu was available in English. Highly recommend a stop here."

We chose this restaurant for it 's peaceful setting and the interesting choices on the menu. It was a Mondaynight and a lot of restaurants are closed although The Maison Rouge down the old was open we preferred this menu. We chose from the set menu and I had local pork rillettes with honey and a small salad garnish which was delicious. My husband enjoyed his goat cheese tart with a tomato sauce, the pastry beautifully crisp and the cheese flavourful. For mains I had lamb cooked pink as I requested and flavourful and tender, a few mixed vegetables and wonderful pommels frites. My husband had the beef stew, tender beef in a rich and filling gravy again wonderful pommels frites he was too full for desert but I had oeuf sur la neige with a caramel drizzle which was excellent best version of this dish I 've had. All this washed down with a pitcher of local red made for an excellent meal and the waiter was very helpful and spoke excellent English a great meal for our last night in France. I have to say that coming from Wales and having a great local butcher I feel well qualified to judge lamb and this was good. The only slight downside was we were sat close to a drain which did smell but we soon forgot it when the food arrived.

There are lots of places to eat in Chinon and we tried different ones each night after looking at all the reviews and found them very mediocre and some had poor service too. Although we were staying at the hotel next to la Gandoyau we had not seen any reviews.well we wish we had tried here first. It was a lovely romantic setting( we sat in the courtyard as it was a warm night) with candlelight and the service was excellent. My husbands steak he says was the best he has had in years and my marinated beef was delicious. The desssert of the day wa a delicious pear almond and chocolate affair and was melt in the mouth. If you are staying in Chinon I definitely recommend you try here.

We have eaten here on more than one occasion and it is perfectly situated, if you are staying at Hostellerie Gargantua. The patron is hospitable and welcoming and the service is efficient. As an aperitif the 'aperitif maison ' is recommended. Our starters were okay and the lamb was good, as was the goat 's cheese and the chocolate mousse. Unfortunately the chicken was dry and the vegetables not up to the standard we have enjoyed previously. On this occasion our meal was not as good as those we have had previously. This restaurant 's standards need to improve, if it is to remain competitive, as there are a growing number of other good local restaurants.

We happened on this restaurant while visiting Chinon. It is several hundred metres on the main street north beyond the centre, but well worth the walk. The large mushroom stuffed with rillette was delicious and the lamb was perfectly cooked and tender. Both the chocolate mousse and tarte aux pommes were very good, and the atmosphere quiet and pleasant. We would certainly choose this restaurant again. Tres bonne qualite-prix!
