Magnificent volcanic lake, always under surveillance because of the maar type, so phreatomagmatic and potentially explosive (his name Pavin is drawn from the Latin pavens, appalling). Its depth of 82 m makes it the deepest lake in the Puys chain. It is a recent formation, of the order of 6900 years. It is a meromic lake, i.e. not subtracting from the water more deeply than 60 m, those between 60 and 92 m accumulating gas carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane and hydrogen sulphide, related to the decomposition of organic matter and which gives it a nausea odor.
