If you've ever wondered what it would be like to have lunch in a French farmhouse, this is the place for you. The best kind of home cooking is served with warmth and flair, surrounded by the shelves of enticing second-hand books also on sale. All the food was super-fresh and locally sourced. We were served asparagus soup with dark rustic bread, followed by a dish of slow-cooked port shoulder in a creamy sauce with morelle mushrooms. The vegetables were especially good: new season's potatoes, roasted to a nutty golden brown; a gratin of chard; Beluga lentils and spelt. For dessert there were fresh strawberries served with what can only be described as home-made condensed milk: unpasteurised local milk, boiled with sugar to create a sweet, gooey cream. This is a totally original place, a meal not to be forgotten. It's also excellent value: around a hundred euros for four people to have three courses, plus drinks and coffee.Reserve ahead, as the opening hours - like the place itself - are idiosyncratic.
