One of the great things about Aix-les-bains, besides lake, mountains, and posh houses, is the fact that it’s only a few minutes from the Autobahn. On our way home from the Provence it happened to be lunchtime when we passed by, so we just drove into the city, parked the car, and entered the first decent-looking restaurant. L’Ecuelle is located in a modern grotto and offers regional food, for example the tartiflette, something like an undercooked gratin with Reblochon cheese. It has been around only for thirtysomething years but has already been promoted to a signature dish for the Savoy region. Always looking for something from the area I couldn’t resist, even if a dish heavy with cheese isn’t probably the wisest choice if you are traveling. Well, after burning my tongue a number of times I started to really like it, also the well-dressed salad they served with it, even though it got warm very quickly because it was put right next to the tartiflette. My wife went for the fresh and clean gambas which came with yummy risotto. She was equally happy with her choice. The service was fast and friendly and spoke decent English. Just one warning: If you eat a tartiflette make sure that afterwards you have enough water with you. We had hopped onto the toy train which takes an hour to go to the lake and back, and in the end I was almost dying of thirst.
