We wandered into this lovely local restaurant for lunch and found a large number of older French ladies who lunch. They all looked up at us in between their chatter. Although they were dining at a number of tables throughout this charming restaurant, they all seemed to know each other. Clearly this was the place that the locals dine. And what a place it is! The food was typical country French and delicious. The stuff dreams are made of. We had a liver terrine that came in a ball jar complete with a layer of delicious fat and a jar of the most perfect cornichons. OMG, you just cannot get food like this in New York! We also had quenelles my absolute favorite that I had not had since the great French restaurants closed in NYC. Oh my soaked in a delicious cream sauce with peas it might have been the most delicious thing I have ever eaten (see photos . But it was the people who completed this wonderful meal. The chef cooks in a glass kitchen so you can watch. He frequently came out to shake everyone 's hands. And his lovely wife helped us through this no English menu. With each new dish that came out the other diners kept watching us nodding with approval as we enjoyed each bite . By the end of the meal we were all old friends (maybe too much of the great wine?! toasting and smiling at each other. This restaurant was one of those completely unexpected treats. If you ever stop by this charming town make sure to stop into Les Roches and sample the delightful food...and people!
Beryl, her daughter and I had lunch here the summer before last, were most impressed. So we made a second visit last week. NO pretentions of any kind, but food of high quality in a friendly atmosphere. We liked the fact that there 's a big window into the kitchen, where you could see everything being prepared. Clean and extra-efficient presentation, with the chef personally bringing some dishes to the table. St. Romain is a wine town, tucked back in the hills a bit. Wine list consists, of course, of mostly local wines (St.Romains of various vintages and vineyards), by the glass, bottle, 1/2 bottle or even 2/3 bottle. We both had the Boeuf Bourguignon which was absolutely super. For the life of me, I don 't know how the cook was able to produce such a silky, rich and electric sauce. Must be due to the ingredients, 'cause the Burgundy beef I cook is never nearly this good. If you 're anywhere in the area, stop here for a unique experience. Highly recommended! G. B. We've lived 15 miles from Beaune these past 13 years, and this is the restaurant where I always take friends and relatives. This is the authentic little French restaurant tucked away in a gorgeous little wine village that you've been dreaming about. Very reasonably priced for impressively inventive high quality high flavor food. By comparison, most area restaurants are overpriced and serve the same five tired dishes. This is the real deal. But you MUST MUST MUST make a reservation if you just turn up, you will be turned away even though half the tables are empty. Oh, gotta recommend a starter course: terrine de ma grand mere, I think it's called. Oh wow.
