Was running out of petrol on the drive from London to lake garda. The petr station was an off the motorway and marked on the sat nav map Asked a local filling up for a restaurant recommendation and he said L'essentiel. We would never have gone there- it's just a square modern building that looks like the caterers it originally started our as. We had the set lunch menu with a glass of wine and coffees and it was 38 euros for the two of us for three courses! Fresh and delicious food, very simply but beautifully cooked and well presented. Lovely staff, modern decor and full of locals -we were the only tourists but made to feel welcome nonetheless. A surprisingly good find and a nice break to the journey.

L'essentiel doesn't look flash from the outside, but the interior has a modern setting with great artworks. The food is fantastic. We couldn't fault the lunch. I'm not sure what the entree was called as it was ordered for us, but it was delicious. It was a creamy mushroom and parsley sauce in a brioche type bun. For main course we had the chouxcroute and the beef, both excellent. The apple tarte and nougat parfait for dessert were also taste sensations. The service was also very good, so if you're passing through Sainte-Marie-aux-Chenes you won't find a better meal!
