"We were just meandering through Bilbao and found this place. We had one of the special menus which were displayed in the window. 3 seafood starters each, fish to follow, 1 bottle of wine, puddings and coffee for €38.50 per person. We were looked after impeccably. We even met the chef and were able to thank him. We ate a bit earlier than the locals , at about 7pm, so had the lovely dining room all to ourselves. A very special place and meal."

My wife and I have eaten and dined in Maider many times in the last few years. It 's very conveniently located in the Abando area in the New Town and close to the Abando Hotel itself. One of the reasons we come here so often is that it is nearly always open. It opens first thing in the morning for Desayuno (Breakfast). At lunchtime they serve a very good value 'menu del dia ' but you can eat a la carte. They close around midnight. The restaurant is divided into two areas. The front of house area is what you see when you enter and that is the bar itself and a trattoria style dinning area. There is a another room in the back which seems to be reserved for those eating the expensive seafood. We 've never dined in the 'posh ' part so I can 't vouch for its style or comfort but I 'm perfectly happy in the front. Okay, onto the food. Although Maider is primarily a 'Fish and Seafood ' restaurant they cook very good meat dishes as well. They use great quality raw ingredients and let them do the talking. That 's usually a good thing but the seafood here is expensive. At these prices I would expect a little more polish and creativity. That is a criticism I could level at many restaurants though. I feel I should add that the dishes have a strong Basque element. Txangurro (Spider Crab) is a popular dish here for example. My favourite time to eat here is lunchtime where they offer a great menu del dia. You have a three course meal and a bottle of wine thrown in for good measure for about £10 which is outstanding value. You can also come in any time of the day and have a drink and some tapas at the bar. They offer a good range of drinks and it 's a friendly place too. I cant give it full marks because some of the dishes are too expensive for what you get. It 's good stuff though and I would recommend coming here.

I wrote a lengthy and positive review of Maider a few years ago so read that if you want to have a reference and a comparison to my recent disappointment. In short, it has always offered great value menu del dia consisting of a decent amount of mid range food which included a bottle of wine. The bottle of wine has gone. the quantity of food has gone, but, most importantly, the love has gone. Lunch in Bilbao should, and always has been for me and my wife, a great time of day whether fine dining or more local yummy fare. The really crummy salad followed by a sad looking pork chop and a few chips tossed onto my plate looked about as welcome, even less so actually, than the sort of stuff churned out in my 1970's primary school. The rest of the meal was no better and it was clear that customers are now a few punters to pay the bill. The entire experience was like dining in a cheap cafe. Disappointing to say the least and having dined here many times over the years I doubt I'll be returning.

This is my daily go to place, eating here several times a week. Weekday menu del dia is 12€, while on weekends is 14€. Really good value for money. All local food, local taste no extra frills. You get fresh food cooked daily, good normal portions, friendly staff Don’t be fooled by the nearby restaurants that charge much more for the same quality. Really good customer service too, very attentive. I skipped a day once and tried a different resto for lunch, and after eating my first plate I regret not going here instead.. learned my lesson will come here when hungry! Recommend to try Entrecot Roquefort their cheese sauce is so rich.

We had been looking for a nice Valentine's meal and thought we'd try this place. There was an English menu which, whilst I try, suits my poor Spanish. Unfortunately, despite ordering from the menu, the dishes served were not as advertised. My partner ordered a beef tenderloin in puff pastry, we assumed would be like a Wellington. She was served a grilled steak with chips and mushrooms. The steak itself was nice. I ordered a Cod Pil Pil, I did have a lukewarm cod in a tasteless oily jelly. With the starter's and two glasses of wine, this was our most expensive meal in Bilbao and probably the least memorable.
