You're on top of the world up here and on a sunny day you can sit at an outside table at this restaurant and see this magnificent panorama while enjoying a lunch that is quite reasonably priced, given that everything has to be hauled up nearly 10,000 feet before it reaches the chef or you. And, an unexpected bonus in this region, there was actually a real vegetarian main course on the menu no special negotiation required. My wife and daughter had this (wild mushroom risotto a cliche in England but a godsend here) and were surprised at how good it was. I had competently cooked salmon. Naturally we'd had to wait for a table but the staff were unfailingly helpful and pleasant and spoke at least three languages; wines by the glass were good, and the desserts included regional specialities. Altogether more caring and pleasing than you might think when it's the only place available and right at the top of this majestic mountain.
The fixed price menu has a good choice. Look at the Pic du Midi website for full details. The quality of the food was good and was well cooked and prepared. Considering they have a captive audience at the top of the mountain I was impressed. The mutton was delicious. The Brebis cheese was good, but so wafer thin as to be stingy and only one slice. By contrast the fondant chocolate desert was fantastic. The price was a little on the high side but as I mentioned earlier, as the only restaurant there, they are not taking advantage of their customers. The staff were friendly and courteous. Make a reservation as soon as you get to the top of the mountain the tables filled up quickly and there was a long wait for those who had not booked.
This restaurant has virtually a captive audience in summer if people do not understand that the cable car does not operate between about 12.45 and 2 p.m. However, they are very fussy about the separation between restaurant and coffee place, stopping people taking their plastic cups of luke warm coffee into the restaurant tables even if the weather outside is cold and windy. Because the people can't go anyway, the service is extremely slow both for getting a table, then receiving a menu, taking the order and the final delivery. Today the coffee machine had not warmed up and several people had coffee that tasted like a warm bath in terms of temperature.
Completely surprised by how this mountain restaurant excelled itself given the captive audience. Super friendly staff, lovely food, a great choice and all for a reasonable price. You can sit indoors or outside in the sun. Take a coat and bear in kind there may be a wait in busy times, you can book the restaurant, we booked as we arrived and then wandered around for 45 minutes until our booking there's plenty to see after all.
