The Rainbow has been a very popular spot in Oshawa Ontario since the 1950's, and while it does not qualify as "fine dining", it qualifies as a fine restaurant. Generations of families have been frequenting this location for 7 decades, and one of the original owners still shows up from time to time to chat with the faithful patrons who keep going back time and time again. The Rainbow is most known for its breakfasts, and while it does do lunch, it is closed in the evening. The place is fairly small, some would say cramped, but in this case, size does not matter. Some mornings there is a long line up of people waiting to get in ( they also offer take out for those who don't want to wait) and most patrons wait patiently for their turn to eat one of their huge , delicious, mouth watering, diet busting meals.Prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes offered. The décor is taken straight from the 1950's & 60's and suits the place and the history that goes along with it. It is worth dropping by this place if you are ever in the Oshawa area.Note: There is no on-site parking, so you can park on the street (metered) or at a nearby lot .

My husband came to visit me at work with our 4 year old son so we went for lunch at this #5 in Oshawa restaurant (??!!??). My husband ordered a regular burger with cheese ($9) and fries ($3), I ordered a French onion soup and poutine. The French onion soup had what I can only assume were croutons (??) and shredded cheddar/mozzarella mix with the Parmesan cheese you shake from a countainer on top (!!??) and I'm pretty certain it was not a homemade soup base as advertised... any decent French onion soup I have had has been with dry sour dough bread and Swiss cheese... I thought that was a culinary standard?I also ordered a poutine, again it came with the driest fries I have ever had and was topped with shredded cheddar/ mozzarella mix (??) I have never had a poutine that wasn't fresh fries with real curds and gravy. The atmosphere was charming and old style. Our waitress was lovely and she asks us so many times if we wanted to pack our meals up but we graciously thanked her, paid our bill and left promptly. I never leave bad reviews but this was one of the worst meal experiences we have ever had.

Just came back from a European vacation and it was great and all but no matter where I went breakfasts just did not compare to the satisfaction I get with a proper Rainbow breakfast! The combinations of personable service, large portions cooked properly and reasonable prices makes this place my go to diner for all things breakfast.
