We ate here the 3rd week in August during a 2-day stay in Marlenheim. The previous week was the village summer fete/extravaganza and it seemed like most of the occupants had headed straight off on holiday afterwards as many of the restaurants and shops were closed. Au Tonneau was the only place we could find that was open on Weds 19th August. Not surprisingly they were busy that evening and service was slow as a result but was friendly. We started with a charcuterie/salad selection which seemed an inspired choice in hindsight. There seem to be a large range of sausages made in Alsace and we were served a very tasty selection. For main course, we were keen to try a tart flambée - an Alsatian thin-based pizza topped with onions/lardons/mushrooms/creme fraiche but no tomatoes. It's definitely worth a try when staying in Alsace and it seems that many restaurants will cook them only on certain evenings. There was a friendly, local feel to this restaurant and we would happily go back.
We have visited Au Tonneau a few times during past twenty years. It used to be quite friedly, genuine alsacian village auberge with good food, and always full of people. On our visit - sunday dinner - there was only two tables of real dinner guests, the rest of the people were relatives, family members and good friends of the patron, and they got all the attention. We were simply ignored. We came to have a alsacian speciality, owen baked pot of potates and Munster cheese. The dish was good, but that is all we had. We speak hardly any french, so that explains it, perhaps. But, they didn't eve try to undestand us or communicate. Dinner experience was worse than what we have had in Au Tonneau, ever, and one of the worst in whole Alsace.
Good service, good wine and good starters, We got the fish dishes which were OK. Location towards the vineyards is a plus.
Tuesday Thursday and Sunday evening: happy hour of 19ha 20h pizza at 5€!!! On-site or take away
