After dining at both La Domaine des Tortinières where we stayed for four nights, and Chateau d'Artigny, we took a chance on trying something less pretentious but well reviewed close to our hotel. Restaurant La Chancelière in Montbazon turned out to be a home run in an area with other good choices. Chef Oliver Argot graciously serves the dishes himself while carefully reminding you what the sauce is composed of. His cuisine is careful and inventive but adheres to good sense and the advantages of using local products. While everything we tried was a hit, we especially loved the sable and lamb "plats", both perfectly prepared and presented with tiny vegetables and sublime sauces. The atmosphere is chic casual but the Maitre d' wears a handsome sport jacket to set a tone of sophistication without pretension. If you only have one night to dine in this area, skip the pricey, somewhat disappointing chateau hotels and reserve a table at La Chancelière.
