The Prestonfield House Hotel, Edinburgh, built in 1687 as a great baroque home of Edinburgh's Lord Provost, is now one of Scotland's highest hotels and hosts Rhubarb's destination restaurant. Prestonfield is located in 20 hectares of remote private plots, although only five minutes from the historic sights of Edinburgh, offers old world opulence, with private dining rooms, luxurious salons and a whisky room with unique furniture from devotees. When we arrived for our dinner, we welcomed very intelligent and friendly staff and accompanied one of the cozy private rooms for drinks before dinner. The restaurant Rhubarb, which settled the large Regency rooms in the heart of the hotel, looked inviting with its wooden trims, heavy drapes, central large chandelier and candle lighting at the tables. The restaurant offers finest Scottish products, locally from small craft suppliers and our meals were a gourmet delight, including vegetarian options. The restaurant also offers a wide range of wines from all over the world. This was an unforgettable experience and I would recommend to anyone seeking a special experience during their time in Edinburgh.
There are a lot of great things about this restaurant and I'm not sure where to start. This is probably one of my best dining experiences in the UK. Not only the food is great but also the architecture, vibe and service of this restaurant are just outstanding. Each room has a very unique and gorgeous decor. It was good that we decided to have a glass of wine on the first floor before going to the dining room. It was right after the Easter bank holiday, so I was told by a waiter that it was a lot more relaxed on that day. We then went to a dining room and got a seat by a window. We could see beautiful nature with a lovely ox. All waiters were kind and welcoming. We had a 3 course set for £65 and we thought it literally is a bargain for having such a great experience in the peculiar place and indeed a delicious meal. We will definitely come back here soon, hopefully we would love to stay in the hotel too!
Our visit to Rhubarb was overall a great experience! The food was absolutely amazing and delivered way over expectations even with the price tag taken into account. The place itself has a special feeling of being quite formal yet with a cozy vibe to it. However it felt like they were short staffed, as there were generally long wait between the waiters came by, and they tended to leave empty glasses and bottles behind on our table even though they were clearing the table for plates. Also no ‘is the food okay’ or ‘are you missing something’ it was very much a take an order and a deliver an order mindset.
What a wonderful place. We went for lunch and had the very reasonably priced set menu. The food was incredible and beautifully presented and we were extremely full afterwards too. The setting was stunning from the room we were in, to the view out of the window. Service was fantastic and so friendly too. I would highly recommended for a special occasion or to make any occasion feel special (including popping in for a cuppa). Beautiful grounds to walk off that lunch afterwards too.
