Rib n Reef Steakhouse

This restaurant is located in a busy boulevard just on the outskirts of the downtown core. It is easy to get to if there is no traffic which is omnipresent in Montreal these days.The greeting begins with the valet parking, the greeting of which occurs in front of a line-up of porsches just outside the front door. A symbolic set-up of vehicles meant to invoke the status of the place. Yes, this is a place for expense accounts for business lunches and formal affairs. But celebrations occur there on the weekend and teenagers and young people would not be intimidated by the elegantly decorated dining room. We were greeted and seated at our table promptly by attractive hostesses dressed in good taste. We were changed tables fairly quickly at our request to have a table a little further from the bar which has a certain noise impact. There was a family with 10 to 15 year olds sitting not too far from us which seemed to enjoy their dinner. Otherwise, couples and small groups dotted the dining room.The service started at a respectful pace by polished servers. We had drinks while we waited for the birthday boy to arrive and we were not pressed to drink more while we waited. When our guests arrived, the service began in earnest at a very appropriate pace for our mood.We ordered enough food to choke a horse and all of it was good, most of it very good. The table-prepared caesar salad was as good as i have had, the poutine was decadent, the steaks were done exactly as ordered and the schechuan lobster was served in its shell with all the meat accessible without any struggle. We had to return a bottle of wine but the wine steward was very graceful and suggested an excellent alternative which worked fine. We were never pressed to buy more wine by excessive pouring, a sure sign of class in my book. Throughout the meal, the service was polished and discreet, at exactly the right pace.The meal cost us 200$ per person (after a generous tip), 20% of which was alcohol. If you dine out in Montreal at the better establishments, you will realize this is not outrageous. It is even a decent value for this type of venue.The wine list has most wines around double the price of the SAQ, the government controlled alcohol retailer. This is not outrageous by any means. The selection is extensive and only a few lower end bottles are offered. There are many upscale bottles available including Sassicaia vintages. It is a very good wine list. Their scotch selection included some of my favorites.We came to this establishment fully expecting an elegant meal, wanting to celebrate the birthday of a person we cherish. We established a rapport with the waiting staff and we were rewarded with a very enjoyable evening.If you go there with expectations of a bargain, in and out service or the bustling atmosphere of the cafe, you are at the wrong place. Let them pamper you and it will be a treat.By habit, before choosing a restaurant, i consult the tripadvisor ratings and jump to the very poor ratings to get a feel for where the restaurant might go wrong. The write-ups of poor service and forgotten items by some of the reviewers simply did not occur to us. Our experience was excellent, nearly flawless.Very young children might find the place a little boring and slow paced but it is not meant for them. Mobility challenged persons would not have an isse getting around the dining room which is all on the same level.P.S; we barely mentionned it was someone's birthday and they came out with a fire spitting candle just before desserts.P.P.S: we committed the faux-pas of wanting to bring some food home and they actually brought it to the valet parked car for us while we still having coffee. Talk about going the extra mile...Bottom line is that we gave them a good table and they took great care of us. A restaurant is what you make of it...

My husband often goes there for business lunches and loves it, so I reserved it for his 40th Birthday supper. We were on the terrace with only 2 other tables of 2-3 people and no one in restaurant when we came in. Therefor crowds were not an issue. We were a group of 10 people. Overall None of us were happy. Service. We were all served at different times for every service. People were finished there appetizers before others were even served. Same for the dessert. It was incredibly slow throughout the whole meal. I had asked to pull down the shade repeatedly as the sun was directly in my eyes and I couldn't even see my food. Finally someone closed it but 5 minutes it was open again. We asked for the bill repeatedly and after 30 min said we'd leave if they didn't give immediately. There was 2 waiters standing at the bar and only two tables of two at this point. Food. Honestly no one was impressed. Anchovies were forgotten on one cessation salad and bacon on the other, even though they asked what we wanted on it. My husbands' filet mignon had fat and was way undercooked as he ordered well done. Mine was cooked for a med-well (as far as I could tell because I couldn't see the meat) but the ends were burnt. My children had fries which they didn't like nor eat, one who loves meat and shrimps wouldn't eat anything. Another's guests' fish was very dry. No one finished all their meal. Dessert. Really horrible. My husband had his birthday cake put in front of him without a word while one of the guests wasn't even at the table. He had time to take his time and finish before anyone else were served. The lava in the lava cake which takes 10 minutes to cook came after 20 minutes and was completely dry! Then the coffee finally came when everyone was finished dessert. I couldn't even drink my cafe latte as I was having severe stomach pains. Later that night a friend of ours had them too. Maybe the Montecarlo potato as it was the only thing we at together in common. Worst supper I have ever had!

What a great experience! My boyfriend and I had gone there for dinner, it was both our first dining experience there. From the beginning to the end the service was very professional. We had caesar salad made at our table with pepper sauce to go with our dry aged rib steaks! The food was phenomenal. We both enjoy having our steaks medium rare, and they were done perfect. Our waiters Mark and Giovanni did an amazing job with our dining experience and we couldn't have been more satisfied. We will definitely be back!

The wife and I wanted some fine dining as it's been a while and this place was close to the hotel. I had baked salmon with mushroom. Great food, great service. That's what we went for any, to get some pampering. Not disappointed.

Excellent restaurant recognized for steaks. To try (without children) very good from the starter, cesar wow salad made in front of us and tasty steak .. very expensive but very good !!!!
