Yesterday evening, a Japanese friend and I went to Shiki for dinner. He was in Paris for business, and as was our tradition when he lived here, we had the CHANKO NABE prix fixe (or "formule" as they would say here). It was excellent, as always -- real Japanese comfort food.In a city where 95%+ of all so-called "Japanese restaurants" are actually Chinese restaurants in disguise, places like SHIKI are few and far between, at least here in Paris. This is not to say, of course, that you can't get a decent meal in an effectively Chinese-Japanese restaurant, but it is to say that it's really not authentic . . . I mean, quite frankly, I am always suspicious of any "Japanese restaurant" that serves "California rolls." (That's not to say that they can't be good, though.)I like to get to this restaurant early, as soon as it opens at 19h00 because there's not a lot of wait staff, and I don't like waiting. (Also, FYI, you can only order the prix fixe menus until 21h30.)The CHANKO NABE (or "Sumo style") prix fixe, which stars a udon noodle soup "hot pot", begins with an amuse bouche and sashimi. At 42 euros per person (You must be at least 2 persons to order this prix fixe), it's not cheap; but, believe me, the quality is excellent ; the portions are very generous ; and, really, there's no better Japanese comfort food that you can get . . . at least here in Paris !The desserts are divided into icre cream at 6 euros and other more traditional or fusion-type desserts. There's a type of tiramisù with green tea, a type of crème caramel (more like a flan) with sesame seeds et a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a "japanese cake" with sweet red beans (essentially, this is like 2 moist pancakes with red azuki beans that have been sweetened (but not overly) with sugar. There are 2-3 more that I'm forgetting. These non-ice cream desserts cost 8 euros.with a glass of beer (just 1 for the 2 of us), the bill came out to 55 euros per person. the ambiance is lively. it's not a large restaurant, and it's always packed. the service is very good and wait staff, attentive and friendly.you will need to make reservations.while it's located on a residential street in the lower 16th arrondissement and about a 10-minute walk from the nearest métro/subway (PORTE DE SAINT-CLOUD on Métro Line #9), it's well worth the trip.

We had dinner there. From the outside, it looks like the old shabby bar it probably was in a past life. It's a bit more pleasant inside. Having said that, when going to a restaurant, I am generally more interested by what I get in my plate. And that was definitely great! A wide variety of Japanese food : sushi and sashimi if you insist, but more interestingly deep-fried soft shell crabs, a perfectly cooked black cod and other niceties. The big let down is the size of the dishes. Two of us had 2 starters, 2 main courses and 1 dessert and we still left the restaurant hungry! The price of each dish is already a bit on the high side (especially given the surroundings - this is not rue Sainte-Anne); therefore if you need to have 2 full diners to feel barely OK... it starts to look like a rip-off.Worth noting that the wine list is a joke and should really be improved.Service was just OK, given teh restaurant was fully packed.Bottom line, good food, but there are definitely better places in the area!

You have to try out the Shiki if you love japanese food. First sign which should re-enforce this message is the fact that many japanese are going to this restaurant. The food is authentic, everything is so fresh and to be honest you will want to try everything.... so difficult to choose. Often, we have taken the "discovery" menu.... 2 out of the 3 times we tasted it, it was just amazing. There is one time where we have been a little bit disappointed. The service is basic, but you should really go there for the food.

Konbanwa! Take the box, the bento, 30 euros only, than sit back, relax and enjoy! Great food, delicious miso, yummie tuna, what a surprise. Just marvellous. And great service too. Vive Paris, Vive Japan. Vive Shiki!
