I don't know if this counts as a hidden catch (they have a huge sign right off I 95) but it's definitely a bountiful one! Skippers' is a traditional dockside oyster bar and restaurant, with both indoor and outdoor seating. If it's a nice day outside I highly recommend the latter: it has a magnificent view of the nearby fishing boats and bridge. As for the food it's amazingly fresh and well made, with generous portions. The staff is super nice and helpful as well. Overall, it's worth a detour from the highway to check it out!
The crab stew was the best crab soup I’ve ever had of any kind. It is cream based like a chowder and is amazing! The oysters are fresh and delicious. My server was very friendly and attentive and my food came quickly. Don’t rely on the “not too busy” timeline on Google maps for this place. It said no waiting, but it was packed when I got there at 5:30 and I had a 40 minute wait. It was nice to enjoy the gators, turtles and boats on the river as I waited and the food was well worth the wait.
First time since Covid that I stopped still excellent. I stop when driving I 95, and take the time to get out of the mindset of driving to actually being someplace...and someplace special. I like to exit I 95 a few miles before, and follow Route 17, to see and appreciate the land and water. At Skipper's, sit outside, look over the water much to take in. The food is real and good; the serving staff is professional and human.
It is all that unbeatable view excellent seafood. They're usually busy but they provide a good service and quality food. They have a turtle pond in the outside waiting area. It's not uncommon to see 3 or 4' alligators in the river by the dock outside the restaurant. One of the best sunset views you'll find.
