Why is everyone so positive about this place? On the plus side, the menu is really interesting, the service was friendly and the beer great. However, we found the food really very disappointing. The twist to traditional basque food would be great if it came with cooking that had the technical ability to execute things well. When we ate here, the guacamole was fine but the main courses were not so. I had soft and tasty squid but the barbecue on which it had been cooked was not clean enough to mean that it came without an overwhelming flavour of carbon. We also had quail that was dry, flavourless and smothered in a wine sauce where the alcohol did not appear to have been fully burnt off leaving it bitter and cloying. On top of that, the quails appear to have been deep fried who on earth sees the need to deep fry a quail? When this plate was returned uneaten we were told it was cooked as intended. I find this rather worrying given how it tasted. Correctly, though, we were then not charged for the plate. I will not go on to give a view on the desserts for fear of boring the reader. I am sure that the inevitable response to these remarks will be to say that “while the restaurant appreciates my comments they really do everything very well as lots of clients attest”. This is fine, but I am convinced that the ability to clean the grilll and cook poultry so that is on the edge of pink and still moist are basic skills. I know lots of people will think I am wrong but read my other reviews I have eaten all over the world, I cook and I think it’s important. So, go to a simpler and better restaurant.
