I was alone and arrived very early for dinner. The 'patron' was just opening up and watering his pot plants at the front door. I was seated and I ordered a carafe of rosé, which arrived with nibbles: The restaurant began to fill up, and the 'patron' became more animated. the place is festooned with memorabilia and photographs, and there was plenty to hold the attention. I soon engaged in conversation with the two couples at the next table - so engaged, in fact, that they wanted to continue the evening with 'digestifs' at their home - an offer, which, at 10.30 in the evening, I politely declined. The food was excellent! I started with a 'flamiche' - a small cheese tart containing bubbling Maroilles cheese. For my main course, I chose a fillet steak au poivre - sublime. There were various desserts, but I went for the crème brulée, flavoured with vanilla and, yes, tobacco! The whole evening was excellent! The food, the setting, the ambiance and the quirky 'patron', who was a hoot! Go there, if you're near Cassel!
We stopped off in Cassel during a brief sightseeing trip, and ended up in this brasserie more by luck than design. But we didn't regret our choice - there is a beautiful view out the back of the restaurant of the fields around Cassel and the food, whilst simple, was well priced, nicely cooked and satisfying. The Tarte Flamande was excellent. The staff were friendly and, whilst the service wasn't especially quick, the general look and feel of the place was enough to keep us occupied whilst we were waiting. Will eat there again if/when I return to Cassel.
Excellent welcome, good food, perfect service. Why is this restaurant only 13th of 17 at present. The food is good, the venue clean and service excellent. Okay there were only two choices on the Euro 13.50 menu for the main course but both were really good as were the desert choices. We would certainly visit again and recommend to others.
The taverne flamande is quite an old restaurant with a lot charm and personality. The food varies between excellent (you have to try the flamiche au maroilles which is a kind of quiche prepared with the local "stinky" but super tasty cheese) and average (the seafood gratine was just ok). Lovely service and people
