We have been regular diners at The Black Boys for years. We hadn’t been for a while, so recently booked for Sunday lunch and walked the 4 miles from home to justify a hearty meal!! It was such delicious food, particularly the tempura prawn and calamari dish that we all dipped in to for starter. The kitchen was able to make this gluten free for my coeliac husband. It was so moreish! The staple dish of haddock with poached egg and mash is consistently yummy and I find it hard to stop eating it, even when I’m full! Matt Miller runs the restaurant superbly. Nothing is too much trouble; he’s constantly scanning the room, checking on customers, accommodating their needs and making each table feel special. He is really quite exceptional as a host. We were also so pleased to see Lindsay back, whose calm, smiling presence is lovely to see! We are booking a meal for a large group (40-50 in a few months time and have no doubt that Matt and his team will work really hard to give us a wonderful evening. It will run like clockwork and the food will be tasty because that is what happened last year when we had an event there!! Where The Black Boys succeeds is in its desire to please the customer. It might not always get it right, but if you let them know, they strive to put it right. Places like this that serve locals, tourists, one-off diners and regular visitors like us, deserve to be celebrated and supported because they are working really hard for us and their community.
