The Black Boys

We have been regular diners at The Black Boys for years. We hadn’t been for a while, so recently booked for Sunday lunch and walked the 4 miles from home to justify a hearty meal!! It was such delicious food, particularly the tempura prawn and calamari dish that we all dipped in to for starter. The kitchen was able to make this gluten free for my coeliac husband. It was so moreish! The staple dish of haddock with poached egg and mash is consistently yummy and I find it hard to stop eating it, even when I’m full! Matt Miller runs the restaurant superbly. Nothing is too much trouble; he’s constantly scanning the room, checking on customers, accommodating their needs and making each table feel special. He is really quite exceptional as a host. We were also so pleased to see Lindsay back, whose calm, smiling presence is lovely to see! We are booking a meal for a large group (40-50 in a few months time and have no doubt that Matt and his team will work really hard to give us a wonderful evening. It will run like clockwork and the food will be tasty because that is what happened last year when we had an event there!! Where The Black Boys succeeds is in its desire to please the customer. It might not always get it right, but if you let them know, they strive to put it right. Places like this that serve locals, tourists, one-off diners and regular visitors like us, deserve to be celebrated and supported because they are working really hard for us and their community.

Where shall I start........booked table for Sunday lunch, escorted to our table ordered drinks and the roast beef, 10 minutes later,food arrives mashed potatoes cold roast potatoes black the beef cold and almost had a pulse unable to get staff attention but very hungry so carried on. My wife lost her appetite at this point, and the staff sprung into life to clean the table. So we ordered banoffi to share. The bill for food and drinks £60.05 ,we handed £65.00 but we're not offered any change so we left bitterly dissatisfied and disappointed, we used to go for Sunday lunch regularly but not any more, sorry about my comments but will not retract.

This is a lovely pub. we have been many times for lunch, the service is great as is the food. We are always made welcome, and nothing is too much trouble. The staff work really hard, keeping tables cleared and cleaned. We also come in for coffee, and the service is just as good. I would really recommend that you try this establishment, you won`t be disappointed.

Excellent town centre pub with fabulous food, vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff. Went for a 21st birthday celebration and couldn't have chosen better. The quality of the food was very high, choice of ales very good and the atmosphere was great. Couldn't fault anything.

The best roast I have ever had, the portion sizes look small but fill you up and are of the best quality The meals are bought out very quickly
