We came here for NYE as part of a short break package. The accommodation and service relating to our stay was excellent but the dinners were a big disappointment. We had booked a table for the early evening sitting of the New Year celebratory dinner. It was a set menu and wasn’t cheap but we were hoping for a special meal and a sense of occasion. However, our waitress oozed stress from the moment we arrived. There was no warm welcome nor recognition that it was NYE. She brought out one course after the next in a hurried fashion, not pausing to ask how the meal was nor engage in friendly conversation. She brought three glassses of Prosecco and, when I pointed out that our daughter was only 14 and asked for an alternative, the waitress just said that the Prosecco was all that was included. Her manner was so abrupt that we started feeling tense and I asked what time the table was needed for the booking after us. The waitress told us, that it was needed as soon as possible and that, as soon as see were finished she needed to reset it for the next people. Eventually, I got up and asked at the front desk how long we had our table for. They said another 50 minutes and we were already on desert so there was really no rush. This must have caused offence because the waitress then left us alone and didn’t return to take further drinks orders. We sat with the wine menu open in front of us but nobody came to take our order. The food was very good but, if you are paying a decent amount and spending NYE in a restaurant (especially one which was only offering a special NYE menu), I think it’s reasonable to expect a celebratory atmosphere and some warmth from the waiting staff. I felt sorry for the waitress because she obviously felt under pressure and she may well have been over worked but she appeared to be experienced and she really ought to have tried harder. We came back for dinner the next evening (it was part of the package) and we were seated at the same table with the same waitress. She was a little more relaxed but she still wasn’t friendly nor warm. She also waited for us all to order fish and chips before telling us that they’d run out. It was completely different at breakfast with friendly, chatty staff who did their best to make us feel welcome. It’s a shame because the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the standard of cooking is very good but we wouldn’t return because of the service.

Our room was supposed to be the Best Room option I 'm afraid it was only adequate and certainly not up to BEST standards at other Chestnut Inns. We’ve had a Best room at the Westleton Crown which was far superior all round. For a very sunny weekend I feel like we were locked indoors in dark and dingy rooms for the entirety of our stay. Our bedroom had no windows, we kept being seated in the area of the pub with no windows and so consequently I felt rather light deprived after the two days. Overall we had a “nice enough” stay, but the general feeling we had was of a place being run with no visible management onsite. It left one with a general feeling of a lack of control over very many areas of the operation. We certainly were not made to feel especially welcome in any way. This is quite sad. On check out we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay, and I provided all of our feedback directly to the hotel in their survey the day after we left, but have had no response. It seems they do not care about their guests ' experience. My overall impression of the Chestnut Group has now declined somewhat. No longer will it be my first port of call in this area.

My husband and I came here for the first time for my birthday lunch. We cannot fault the food and service both were excellent. We both had seabream with chorizo marmalade and bean cassoulet. The fish was cooked well and the dish was rich in flavour but not too overpowering. For dessert, I had the sticky toffee pudding and my husband had the apple and rhubarb crumble. Both were absolutely delicious. The servers were attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant had a nice friendly atmosphere; it was busy but felt relaxed. We'll definitely be back here again. Thanks to all the staff for a wonderful experience!

We stayed for two nights in the Arch Rooms and it was nice to be away from the pub (about 5 min walk) so it was lovely and quiet at night. Great rooms and the pub itself, honestly couldn’t fault it. Completely recommend!
