Thursday night and a group of six of us. We went for the set menu and found the dishes to be of very mixed quality. The underlying prawns in the salt and pepper dish were good, but the coating had an oddly grainy texture. No taste of crab at all in the san choi bau. The fish parcels in banana leaf were good and the beef satays the best of the starters, very tender and an excellent quantity and quality of sauce. Kapitan chicken was extremely greasy, pools of oil in the dish; the rendang was great and the Szechuan eggplant excellent - best dish of the night. So, a strangely uneven experience.Service was okay, but fairly rushed and impersonal and the wine prices very high.Overall not great value.Lost half a point for the noise - several large tables of guffawing blokes and shrieking ladies (who only got louder as the night wore on and the bottles emptied) made conversation difficult. Lost another half point for the toilets; hopelessly inadequate number for the size of the restaurant, both for ladies and for gentlemen.Disappointing.

Lunched here one Saturday, with family. A large restaurant, with nice harbour views. A reservation is a good idea as The Malaya was nearly full by 1.00pm. Our entrees included otek otek, satay beef, spanner crab san choy bow, and roti with curry sauce. The otek otek was excellent as was the beef, although the sauce with the satay was closer to a jam, and not a traditional satay sauce. The bow was also very tasty however the crab could have been in larger pieces for appearance and texture. The roti was good, but perhaps not as good as Chinta Ria's roti as it was not crunched, and a bit thick. Nevertheless all were very nice. The mains consisted of squid with lemongrass and chilli and the squid was a little overcooked. So hard to get it right. We also had a duck curry which was excellent. Service was friendly but professional. This restaurant has an extensive and different menu from many restaurants of its type and choosing a dish takes some serious consideration as all sound great.Recommended

This is probably my fourth visit to this restaurant and I felt that the quality has dropped a little since my last visit 6 years ago. The hainan chicken was a disappointment. Would have elevated the dish if they had some soy sauce to go with it but the rice was nice and fragrant. The beef curry or massaman curry as they call it was tasty with chunk of tender meat. Szechuan eggplant was good as well. We also had chicken with chilli and lemongrass and this was the worse dish of the night. There was no hint of lemongrass at all in the dish. Just tasted like chicken "sambal". Would have been better if chicken was deep fried and tossed with lemongrass and chilli. I can't fault on their service. Food was quick to arrive and wait staff were friendly and welcoming. Nice ambience and view.

Visited here on a Friday night, the views are nice and the food is fresh and good quality without having to wait too long. The portions are reasonably large and fairly priced I believe. I do think the decor is lacking though - they have a prime location and good quality food however the inside reminds me of a cheap European buffet which is disappointing as I think it has so much potential and would also improve the atmosphere. The service was great and the staff were super friendly and helpful.
