I wouldn 't have written this review if Steve didn 't offer me a sample yesterday...instead I would have simply walked back to my car and driven away. He must have read me like a children 's book. See, my first and only smoked mullet experience from an extremely popular restaurant which I love in Cortez left me believing it has to be served whole, boney, mushy and worst of all devoid of that delicious smoked flavoring. That said, I can 't help but believe it was Divine Intervention that dragged my ass away from the BBQ truck across the street to have my epiphany at The Mullet Shack. These guys seriously saved me from a life without mullet and I owe them for eternity! I 'm sure the other menu items are fantastic too, but I am literally drooling as I type the words smoked mullet and I find that crazy.
Super great food. So I have to admit as a boat bum, I am more of eat the fish you catch , not eat the fish you net type of guy. Coming from San Diego, the idea of smoked mullet was blah. I happened to stop at his shack on 41 just before Big Bend Over at the suggestion of a friend. Damn, I owe her. This is freaking excellent. He has a dip and he really needs to start selling like gallon size. It is that good. I am a smoked food fanatic he has it down pat. Just the right amount of smoke. The fish flakes perfectly but still has the right amount oil. Flavor is spectacular.
Thanks Bill, I've never eaten mullet but based on your review I'm heading down there today. Going to make a fish dip with their smoked mullet. Very few fish I don't like. These guys are awesome, I sampled their smoked and fried mullet along with their outrageous fried green tomatoes. The smoked mullet is very good and made an excellent fish dip. Their fried mullet and fish spread is very good as well. I'll be a regular from here on out. I never thought of mullet as edible yet it is distinct in flavor and very good.
Set up at the Ruskin Seafood Festival and I am so glad. The smoked Mullet was moist and flavorful and tender. Simple perfection with hot sauce as the only condiment. This is why God invented food trucks!
