"Visited on a Sunday lunch time. Was very busy. Staff working really hard and still smiling! Old pub, steeped in history. We sat in bar (as we have a dog), food was delicious and reasonably priced. Good selection of drinks."

Regular visitors to the Peaks, just in and looking for somewhere to eat later that evening. The George was booked up, so we asked them for a recommendation, and they said the Cheshire Cheese. So we did, and it was a top suggestion. Very good selection of local beers, nice soup and everyone liked their mains (I had cote de boeuf, perhaps nervously in a pub setting, but I should have had faith it was really good). We were happily replete at this point, but noted the next table being served an absolute slab of what looked like sticky toffee pudding no stupid little bijou portions here,it seems. All in all, a great meal with good beers in a 17th century pub that just seeps history .

Staying at a local caravan site, we had intended to skip this place as it was the first pub on the road leading into the village, which had reviews that were not at all favourable. Rain forced us in, and we were glad it did, for the reviews we had read bore little resemblance the experience of our visit. The food was good for pub offerings. The service was efficient without being over attentive. The 17th century ambience was charming, and finally, the price for our two meals was very reasonable. So all in all, it is well worth a visit, and they btw welcome dogs.

Lovely 17th century coaching inn, great character in a great location. We stayed in room 7 had its own separate entrance from the pub. Lovely spacious room. Only downside was noise from the room upstairs, they were up and pacing around till the early hours of the morning, running water, flushing toilets etc which kept waking us up and again at 5am. Obviously not the pubs fault and we did mention it to a member of staff on leaving and they did apologise, not that they had to. Lovely friendly staff as well.

Three local lads walk into a dark bar, mid afternoon. There's no-one behind the bar at all for a good five minutes. When a server appeared, she had no idea whom was to be served first. Landlady appeared with glasses from the dishwasher, completely ignored everyone then disappeared again. Customers with menus in their hands were served as a priority by the young lady behind the bar. Realising that there was no chance of being served as the bar area was full, walked out and went elsewhere.
