Away from the crowds in Strasbourg, but close enough km, minutes drive from the city center), Au Cheval Noir at Rue de la Republique in Hoenheim offers the exquisite food, genial service and pure tranquility one expects from a traditional French restaurant....Our lunch of quenelles and cordon bleu was excellent, as was the rich, fruity Alsace Riesling that Gerard, the charming proprietor, recommendedi. Even better, given that it was a Monday holiday when most other restaurants in town and out were shuttered. Thanks as well to waiters Fred and Serge for their conversation. You don’t have to drive. We biked a beautiful km along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, past nesting swans and a chorus of blackbirds. Recommended for a memorable afternoon.
My wife grandparents often invites us to this restaurant. The food is typical Alsace, the restaurant itself resides in a nice Alsacian architecture house. It's located in a little village near Strasbourg. The food prices (except for Sunday) are pretty reasonable and the portion is...quite big for a french resto. The chef menu (or menu of the day) is normally quite good with very reasonable price. The problem with this restaurant is the inconsistency. Sometimes it was perfect, other times, they lost half of the stuffing in my poussin menu or I'm missing the foiegras in my steak tournedos rossini! I would like to rate this resto higher, but I cannot, as long as the service and food quality is still hit and miss.
We ate here for dinner one Saturday night. The restaurant is in a very typical Alsacian building which we found charming. The food was also authentic and of the region and we enjoyed our meal very much. We took the menu with the wine pairings...and this way we were able to sample the wines of the area as well as the food. A very enjoyable dinning experience.
Visited here with my family. Was greeted by a well-dressed and well-mannered Matthieu, the mâitre'd. Though he only knew limited english, he tried his best to welcome us into this local restaurant serving only the best Alsatian food. Would come here again.
